Choosing A Surgeon

I attended 3 Informational Seminars before I found a surgeon that I wanted to use. The first one did not accept my insurance, I did not like the second one, but absolutely loved the third one. How many attempts before you found the right surgeon?

I went to one at a center of excellence.  My pcp recommended one at his clinic.  I went to the one at my pcp's clinic.  Linda

My insurance would only cover one practice for GB surgery. In that practice, there are 3 fantastic surgeons. I researched each online, and attended the seminar and absolutely loved my surgeon from the moment he began the seminar.  Sounds like you may have found yours as well. Good Luck on your journey

I went to one information session and was TOTALLY unimpressed. I knew I wouldn't use that surgeon. The next information session was AMAZING. So professional and informative. Wow, what a difference! I decided to go to with the second doctor obviously. I really couldn't believe how totally different 2 practices could be. I am 100% comfortable with the surgeon that will be doing my surgery. He has an amazing reputation and is a leader in the field. He has done over 3000 surgeries!

The only way I would consider having this surgery was if Dr. Higa performed it. I've heard nothing but the best comments from dozens of people that I know who have been fortunate to have Dr. Higa as their surgeon. I did my background checks anyway, knowing w/ almost 100 percent certainty that he would be the onlly one I would let do the surgery. He is one of, if not, the best there is.

My insurance required a Center of Excellence.  I went to one seminar and found the surgeon very approachable and she seemed to have a passion for what she does.  She seemed to be a bit on the knitpicky side as well.  I wanted that in a surgeon.  Someone too laid back would worry me.

I attended two seminars.  At the first, the surgeon didn't even bother to show up!!  They gave you all of these loose leaf papers to fill out and to take home.  The ladies who hosted it had never had WLS surgery.  Totally unimpressed!   The second one was at the Cleveland Clinic.  I was so impressed with all the nurses and the surgeon.  They gave everyone a three-ring binder with all of our information tucked neatly inside. And the best thing about it was the nurses had had WLS surgery!!  The surgeon spent a lot of time answering questions, even bravely answered my mom's about an age limit to installing a "laptop"!!  He cracked a smile and then answered her!!  I fell in love with him then and there!!

two psyche evals, two PCPs,3 seminars 2, support groups, talked personally to 6 differnet Drs or their staff and a partridge in a pear tree later. I pretty much chose the second one I met and have my consult with him Nov 5th or 12th. Scheduled for the 12th but am first if someone from the 5th cancels.

I chose my surgeon by track record and mortality rate.  His track was excellent and mortality rate Zero.
