Personal trainer said to stop eating cheese

A personal trainer said cheese is a big no no to eat, even cottage cheese. He said if we want to lose weight, we need to stop eating cheese. I don't eat a lot of cheese but it is definately a part of my proteins, especially cottage cheese.

He is entitled to his opinion, of course, and he is an excellent trainer and very knowledgeable on nutrition but I would like your thoughts on eating cheese. Thanks!

Well, since I don't really excercise and don't have a personal trainer, I don't know what I'd say to her/him.  But, cheese is a substantial part of my protein intake.

If your food intake will allow you to to exclude cheeses while you are in a workout program without compromising your protein intake, then why not give it a try?

I hope you get the reason why.. I get about 50% of my daily protein from low sodium cheese and dairy products..

OMG I couldn't live without cheese!!!  My friends call me "the mouse", if that tells you anything!  I'm 3+ years out, maintaining just fine, and have eaten cheese since I was put on solid foods! Lord, I practically lived on cottage cheese in the early stages!   I do know that cheese can be high in fat, but it is also a good protein source.  Of all the different surgeons and hospital bariatric program nurses that I knew in Miami, none of them said anything negative about cheese!

So, my thoughts on eating cheese - I think it's like anything else, it's ok in moderation.  If I were lactose intolerant, I think I'd flip out!

Good luck to you.  Jeanne

Much  love  from Georgia!!

I agree with the other gals...I eat cheese a lot for protein and calcium.  It's really a "go to" food for me cuz it never gets stuck and can travel well...keep it in my purse often (like to go string cheese).

I would want to know more about WHY??
I eat a lot of cheese too. Cottage cheese but 1% is almost a daily thing and cheese sticks get me thru when I travel to places where I may have a hard time finding a good food choice for me.
Never mind all the calcium.

Does your trainer know much about bariatric surgery?  I would get your fitness advice from him and get your nutritional advice from your NUT.

The only time I was told to stay away from cheese ( and all dairy) was when I went to a naturopath Dr.  He said that dairy and various other foods contained hystemines (It was a while ago and I think thats what he called it) which inhibit weight loss and cause bloating (like an alergic reation)

I chalk it up to different schools of thought. B/c I heard that skim milk actually helps you lose weight so who knows. I like my dairy and w/ RNY malabsorption and needing to take extra calcium, I'm not about to cut out dairy...especially cheese.

Here is a link to naturopathic diets (in case you wondered)
