What is the average age for WLS?
Hi,
I have been reading peoples posts for awhile (and it has been great!!) and wondered what the average age is to have WLS. I am 49 and noticed there are many people in their early 20's, I have also seen people over 50, (that's me next year)
.
Just wondered what the stats are for the average age?? Is anyone to old or young?

The number that sticks in my head is somewhere in the mid-40's. I have a report on it somewhere... just can't put my finger on it at the moment (it's buried in my million bookmarks on Delicious). I could be wrong, but that's what I'm currently remembering. LOL

The ASBS guidelines suggest WLS up to age 65 as appropriate. You're definitely young enough! If you haven't heard of it, please also know that there is another WLS option called the duodenal switch that offers numerous advantages. Please visit duodenal switch forum for good info about this procedure! I started out wanting the lap-band, but after reading all the research on it, I know that the DS is my best fit b/c I like eating :} & it has the least chance of weight regain, & I want to be able to take anti-inflammatories (can't with RNY).

Thanks for the DS info. My sister had it 4 years ago and is a BIG fan of DS!!! On several occasions she has asked me to have that procedure. I live in CT and the closest experienced DS surgeon practices in VA. I called them last year and was told with my lower bmi, they didn't think it warranted a trip there. My sister wanted me to travel to CA to another skilled DS surgeon. Both surgeons are to far away if there were complications. After much research, I realized DS was not the choice for me. RNY is the WLS I am planning on having. I appreciate you taking the time to put other options out there. I realize DS is a wonderful choice for some. I am glad you are happy with your decision. Thanks!
You may not have heard, but Dr. Gagner is moving back to New York city in March. He's one of the best DS surgeons in the world, so if you really like the DS, maybe he will be an option for you.
I've also heard some very good things about Roslin and Inabnet, who are also in NYC.
Best of luck in your journey.

Hi. I had the surgery when I was 50. I am now 52, it's been 15 months since my surgery. I have lost 139 pounds, started at 257, now at 118. It has been a long journey, as I also had back surgery 6 months after the RNY, with rods put in my back. I think it would have been so much easier had I not had that big surgery so soon after the weight loss surgery. I am glad I did it, though. I weigh less than I did in high school. My husband is pretty pleased, too:) I say go for it, we have what? another, 30 years or so. They might as well be spent thin and happy! Good luck to you.
In most of the studies I've read, the average age of the group is in the 40s.
