Is it difficult after wls to cook meals for the family?

I am just begining the process for wls and reading everyones posts has really helped me out.  I am sure that I will have many questions for everyone once things get rollling.  But for now I have a more general question that may seem silly but I am going to ask anyway.  I have 3 teens and a 3 year old at home.  Did anyone have trouble cooking for thier families after the surgery?  I mean with the smell of the food or just knowing that you would not get to eat with the family?  I have seen that many people say they have a problem with certain odors or foods.   I have learned in my advancing age that I appear wiser when I ask for advise from those who have personal experience in areas that I so not.  Thank you all.

The first few weeks it was hard to be in the house while everyone was eating dinner and you are on a liquid diet. It was hard to smell the food cooking, I was fortunate my husband cooked for him and my kids 5 nights a week the other two nights he had to work 2nd shift, so my guys got very simple meals. Sandwiches, waffles anything simple.  After a few weeks when I was able to start eating again it became much easier. Now that the weight is starting to come off I don't feel like I am missing out on the "good" stuff as much. So worth the sacrafice !!!!

I have had no problems with food odors. I love to cook. I cooked Easter Dinner two weeks after my surgery with help only to lift pots and pans. I did it knowing full well that I could not touch a thing. Now I make what I am craving even if I can't eat it because I know they will enjoy it for me. And they really appreciate it. I just make sure that there is always something around that I can eat.

It is difficult at first because smells in general bothered me then, but that soon passes. In the early months I pretty much just made separate food for my hubby and ate what I could of my own foods. But as I got further out and able to eat regular food, I usually make something that we can both eat. There are casseroles that do not use pasta or potatoes or other starchy fillers. For breakfast I often make omelettes and if others want toast with it, they can have that. There are also breakfast casseroles that do not use bread of potatoes as filler. You just have to get creative. I buy rotisserie chickens often now, or do some meat in the crockpot. I can eat almost anything as far as meat goes as long as it is moist enough. I fix a potato and veggie to go with it, but just don't eat the potatoes. You learn as you go.

Smells were and sometimes are a problem. I understand I cant have alot of things, so, its ok, but still hard.

Best of luck

I have the DS and I was only on soft foods for a couple of weeks. After the initial healing period was over, I could eat very healthy just like my family. The only difference is now I require more fat, so I'll just add a little extra butter or eat more avocado or other healthy fats, ect (I don't absorb most of the fat I eat, so I need to eat more to not get constipated. My cholesterol is 94),  to my food and not theirs. But we all eat pretty much the same. Lots of lean protein, fruit, veggies, and healthy complex carbs, which I'll either add extra fat too, or eat less of. It's not that big of a deal, really.

lol, looooove the "ask for advice" thing!

I love to cook, and I have 6 & 11 year old daughters and my husband to feed.  For the first few weeks after surgery, I cooked very simple stuff for them - soup & sandwiches, pizza, the occasional frozen dinner, etc.  They also had a fair amount of takeout food.  It wasn't that it bothered me to cook for them - I was still just really tired & trying to let everything heal and settle.

Once I was on to puree-consistency foods, I would often throw a smidge of whatever I cooked for them that was WLS-friendly in a mini food processor and have that for my dinner.

Now, I pretty much plan on having the protein part and some veggies of whatever I cook for my family, and that works out pretty good.

Good Luck!

I haven't had any problems with oders but the first few weeks it was really hard because my family was eating regular food while I was on the liquid diet. I didn't feel hungry, just left out. I even posted disscusions on here about how upset I was becuase I felt like my family time was gone. After the first few weeks you start eating solid foods and you eat at the same time at them sometimes but then it takes longer then them to finish. Eventually you learn to cook healthy foods and they love it! I just make one extra serving for myslef and eat it the next day for lunch, and have the same dinner they do. Everything about your WLS journey is going to take time, there will be good days, bad days, sad days, mad days. But after that weight comes off and you are able to get around more, and become active...it will all be worth it! Good luck! =)
