My PCP prescribed Robitussin w/codeine for me this past winter. I was over 6 months postop at the time. I took 1 teaspoonful and had no problems with it.

I usually take Delsym.  It is available OTC and comes in grape and orange flavors.. It doesn't not have an obnoxious flavor and works very well for me.  When I get to the point that this doesn't work I get a script for Tussionex.  It has a narcotic in it and they are very protective of it but it works very well.

Hope you feel better soon.

Tell me had you tried Buckley's before surgery????

I mean that stuff will make a HEALTHY PERSON PUKE!

The smell of it is enough to cause me to gag!
Once and only once did I try it- because the daughter of the elderly woman that I care for used to give that to her mother occassionally- i can't stand it now!!!!    There is NO WAY I would think that anyone who has had ANY of the WLS surgeries would be able to get that stuff down... Bleeech

If you are leary of the sugar aspects of regular cough syrup I know my mother took a Sugar Free Cough syrup (as a diabetic) and I took it once, preop.  It was no more putrid then other syrups I had taken.  I can't remember if it was prescribed or over the counter.

Oh gosh, just the thought of Buckley's makes my mouth water like I'm going to throw up!!!!  My sister had a bad cough while we were up in Canada.  I had remembered one of my friends from there telling me about Buckleys.  I told my sister she should try it.  She took a dose of it.  I asked her how it was and she could not talk.  Later, she told me if she had tried to talk, she would of puked!!!!  I smelled it and it reminded me of an ammonia floor cleaner!!!!!  Ewwwwww....  I give you a lot of credit for taking that.

thanks for all your input, but I am discovering that no over the counter medicine is working for me.  I am spending my nights coughing, at time uncontrollable.  No rest and my Doc only suggested Robitussin (DOESN'T WORK).  I know that every single time I get a cold or flu it ends up being bronchitis..or post nasal issues that lead to bronchitis.  this is wearing me out, today i go to my docs for a chest xray..I have been out of work from Monday June 27 - today and i know my boss is getting impatient.  I can't drink hot tea in my sleep and certainly cannot hook up and IV with NYquil in it, though i don't think it would work anyway...i am so tired and weak..my appetite is 0..i have to force myself to eat something.
