It seems I only lose weight when I am on liquids only.

I will give you the best advice a Newbie can get:

   Stay off the scale!

The scale is your worst friend early off. Weigh yourself at your doctors visits no more than every three months. Early out you will jump up and down as your body, thinking you are starving, will try to hold onto every calorie it can. Over time you will net lose, but day to day you may actually appear to be gaining. You will know you are actually losing by your shrinking size and how loose your clothes fit. Measure your protein and water intake not your weight. Once you are in maintenance then  you can get out the scale. I still only weigh myself once a month.

Me at nearly 500 lbs and me at half that weight a year and a half later,
"I refuse to measure success in pounds lost, but rather in life gained!"
