Ok, I'm pre-op and right now trying to make sure I'm ready for the fight to get my protien in...
I've tried everything i can find and get in. I'm ok with the taste of most of them. They aren't great, just ok... I can deal with ok, Hell you don't get to my size with only eating food that tastes great... But the smell of the whey kills me... I tried to mix a 42 gram protien shot with water (was told they could be mixed) and drink it tonight to make sure I can do it... No way can I get past the smell... Every chance I try to drink it I have to hold my nose or not breath.
I'd love to say it is doable, but we taste what we smell and we smell what we taste... Ugh...
how do you all do it? I'm really starting to worry about it!!

I mix mine with 8oz of milk to go with my water, sometimes I throw in a few strawberries if its vanilla.  My problem with them that I did not have pre op is the foam and thickness.  It gives me gas in my chest even when letting it sit for 10 min before I start sipping on it.  I add alot more liquid than it says on the labels to make them thinner and easier to get down.  The Syntrax nectar are thinner and a nice change from the "Shake" There are tea flavors and fruit flavors. They are sold at vitamine shoppe

Well, first of all, those protein shots contain mostly collagen protein, which we don't absorb well at all.  Some do have a little bit of whey isolate in there, which is the type of protein we need, but they contain mostly collagen.  You won't really get 42 grams of protein from them.  They're a waste of money.

If the smell of whey isolate protein drinks bothers you, you might try drinking it from a cup with a lid.  Hides the smell.

Hey, Kelly! That's a great idea! I'm going to try that.

YES yes. what Kelly writes.

Collagen is boiled horse and cow skin.  NOT a quality protein!

Yep - a coffee mug with a lid works wonders.  Another thing to consider though -- I LOVED the protein shakes before surgery.  I also thought I should try them out.  After surgery, it was all I could do to gag them down.  Two years later, and I'm back to really enjoying them again.  Go figure.

Perhaps you haven't found the right shake yet - there are a lot of gross ones out there.  Don't torture yourself - do yourself a favor & get some samples so you find something you might actually enjoy drinking.  I really like Chike (Vanilla & Banana are my favorites).  You can get free samples of all 5 flavors on the website www.chikenutrition.com.  I mix mine with 7-oz of cold water.  Sometimes I mix it with skim milk, light soy milk, almond milk or add it to a smoothie or hot chocolate (the chocolate flavor).  Chike has 28 grams of whey protein isolate & actually tastes delicious.  Plus, Chike smells like cake mix - yum!  I'm such a dork - I really enjoy smelling it as I scoop it out of the tub :)

Those 42 gram protein things seem nasty.  My nutritionist described them as "Jello before it sets".  Yuk.  Another poster recommended Syntrax Nectar.  It's not as thick as the other types.  I used to like the Roadside Lemonade mixed with lemon Crystal Light.  They have other fruit ones as well.  My fave is the Latte Cappucino.  I mix that with Believe Mocha Latte or Italian Cappucino.

www.bariatriceating.com carries the Syntrax Nectar proteins, as well as a boatload of others, including the Believe ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee ones.

www.vitalady.com has samples you can try before you commit yourself to a 2# canister.

It took me about 6 months experimenting with different ones before I found a few I really liked.

I am with you on that one. I can't stand the smell of protein. I am 10 months out and have a very hard time with protein. I have tried several of them and the protein makes me gag. Alas someone I know who had the surgery a week before me, told me to try the Body Fortress Whey Protein from Walmart. It is inexpensive too. Well I have had this container for about 2 weeks sitting on my counter. This morning I decided to give it a try (actually got brave enough to try it) LOL!!  This is my recipe I used:

6 oz FF milk
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder  26 G protein
1/4 c frozen blueberries
1/2 banana
2T FF cool whip
4-5 ice cubes
splash of Davinci SF Raspberry syrup

I put this in my Rocket blender and lo and behold there is no protein taste or smell. Even when I opened the container of the protein powder I couldn't smell the protein. I am so excited that I have found one I can drink. It made about 2 cups. I have drank half of it already. In about a half hour time frame.
I know I will be able to get my protein in with this powder. I don't know why I didn't try it before. I did buy the cookies and cream a while back and did not like it at all.

Good luck in your journey.
Take care,
Carolyn

Yup, drink out of a cup with a lid. I LOVE the little Blender Bottles - plastic cup with a wire whisk ball and a lid so you can just shake up your protein shake and drink it from the bottle. I avoid the smel by using a straw, but that's because I have a sleeve, not a pouch - I don't recommend straws for RNY patients.
