How to make a 2 oz "meal" last 30 min?!

I've tried and tried, but a medicine cap full of protein shake or whatever is very hard to stretch out for a half hour.  I understand why the need for tiny sips, and I do the best I can, but if I go too slow, I either lose interest altogether and don't want to finish, or it gets warm or cold (the opposite of how it started out and it's a big bother to rechill or rewarm it.

Any ideas?  I want to do this by the book (and my book keeps trying to rewrite itself, lol)

Different doctors have different ideas about how long a meal should take.  Some say 30 minutes, some say 20 minutes.  Personally, I think as long as we eat slowly and chew well, it's all fine.  With liquids, as long as it doesn't upset your stomach, there is really no need to go so slow.  You won't stretch out your pouch or stretch your stoma or anything by drinking liquids, even if you gulp a whole bunch really fast.

I got this thing called the GymBoss.  It's an interval timer that I have set to go off every 2 minutes to remind me to take a sip.  This way I am not gulping and I am not forgetting to sip (which I do).  I heard about it one of the suport groups I went to and I use it constantly.  I also use it when I am eating my soup or pudding.  It has been a lifesaver.

With my program the time thing really deals soft and solid foods, not liquids. While it's true at the beginning sipping took longer to consume 2 oz, you'll soon progress to being able to take a full regular swallow. Plus, liquid don't stay in your pouch very long so you really don't need to worry about swallowing too fast to fill your pouch.

So I'm with Kelly...just go slow but don't worry about time limits with liquids.

You are going to do great and lose lots of weight and be heathy.  You need to first not put to much pressure on yourself.  Recovery is not going to be textbook.  They give you guidlines to follow..but if necessary, you will need to tweak them a little for your own personal needs.  I didn't even start protein until 9 days after surgery because they knew it would be to hard to get down at first with all the internal swelling..you need to concetrate on not dehydrating..as long as you are getting in your fluids, the protein won't be far behind..be sure you are getting in at least 48-64 oz of clear liquids...water, crystal light, sugar free popcicles, sugar free jello...If you can't get the protein down today..maybe try again in the next day or 2...keeping well hydrated is vitally important this soon after surgery.

2 oz. meals are just that, soft or solid foods. Protein shakes are supplements to solid foods. Make your shakes in 4-6 oz sizes, and take sips every few minutes.  Solid or soft foods are 2 oz in size for new post ops. Use baby spoons or forks for very small bites. Cut food into small portions, and place fork or spoon down until you've swallowed the previous bite. I'd also suggest attending regular support meetings for more help. DAVE

Usually doctors say 15minutes...

You can take a sip and wait 2minutes, or do what I do...have a few bites, then get up and walk away. Most little kids do that and I see why now. Usually when you come back, you wont be hungry

Hey girl,
I had my surgery the day after you and I am also doing the 2oz meals... Ironically I have found it takes me LONGER to eat my 2 oz of food (not talking protein shakes) than it takes my husband to eat his meal.  I concentrate very hard on chewing thoroughly and swallowing and feeling the food slide down. (I put my spoon down and wait).  When I feel it go into my pouch I know it's time for another bite.  I don't really watch the clock too much but i'm figuring it's about 15-18 minutes for me to finish.  My food is full liquid whi*****ludes soups that i'm suppose to blenderize but i leave it a little "chunky" because I crave the chewing part.  As long as i'm making absolutely sure it's blenderized by my teeth before I swallow it's fine.
The food that's hot gets cold, and cold gets warm which sucks so I'm not sure what to tell you about that.  It doesn't bother me, but you could try putting hot foods in a thermos bowl (like for kids' lunches) and cold food in a container on top of a bigger container that has ice in it to keep it cold.
GOOD LUCK!
(I can't wait to get to the next food stage.. i'm dying for an egg...)

I'm having a hard time getting my 2 oz. meals to last for 30 min. also.  I am on liquids. for 2 1/2 weeks and since we don't have anything to chew it is really hard.  Maybe all this will get easier.

Good Luck
