Can I take a laxative/stool softener in pill form?

My Dr. prescribed colace (stool softener) right from the time I was let out of the hospital and 2 x per day.  I now take 3 (ok per him) right before I go to bed and that seems to have helped a bit too.

Right after I got home, I was super constipated and they told me it was OK to use the glycerin suppositories and that seemed to help free stuff up in there too.  I keep them in my medicine cabinet when I need a little assistance in that dept  :-)
