Did WLS cure your back pain?

Ive been on painkillers for years due to a bad lower back (herniated/ruptured disks) . To what extent did losing the weight affect your daily back pain?

For the most part, yes. I have two bulging disc and some spinal stenosis. Just before surgery, I had epidural steroid injections and physical therapy. This helped so much and then the weight loss after surgery kept the pain from coming back. The only time I have problems now is if I overdo like lifting something a little too heavy. I carried most of my weight on my front which caused the back issues I'm sure. The heaviest part of my now is still on my front but I've lost enough to make a big difference.

Unfortunately, no.  My back is much worse than it used to be.

Same as Kelly.  I had some back issues before surgery, but they wern't very bad.  Since surgery I have been off work because my back is so messed up.  It definitely got a whole lot worse...  Sorry.  I am sure some people have had better results than me...
I my RNY!  It saved my life!     Get Ready for the New You!

Before WLS, I had one lower back surgery, still with three herniated discs, and my neurosurgeon wanted to do a spinal fusion on me. I was almost crippled at times with the pain. Now, 160 lbs. lighter, I do an hour of high impact aerobics 5 x week, I run 4+ miles 2x a week, and I lift weights, all with NO pain. WLS has made all the difference in the world. I don't need spinal fusion. I don't need anything anymore at all for my back.

My back pain was due to sacroiliitis/degenerative arthritis. I had chronic pain in my hips because of it. I was taking Celebrex twice a day and getting injections around every three to five months. Since surgery I have not had to take the Celebrex nor have I had any injections. Very rarely do I experience any pain in my back anymore. I also had knee pain from degenerative arthritis which has greatly improved because of the excess weight lost and probably postponed knee replacment for a number of years or maybe even for the rest of my lifetime. We'll see as time goes on.

WLS, it's a wonderful life!

Well, it helped it a lot, but I do still take NSAIDs daily. Which form of WLS are you considering? NSAIDs are a big no-no after the RNY.

No, WLS did NOT cure or help my back pain at all.  It is actually worse.

Knees yes. Back not at all :( The bottom of my spine actually looks like a wishbone. Not sure anything is ever going to help it.

What a depressing thread, I thought everyone was going to say it made it 90% better... instead there are people saying it got worse...yukkk.

I cant take NSAIDS anyway as I am allergic, that being said I am hoping to Switch
