I really debated between the RNY, which my insurance did cover, and the DS, which it would not.  I decided to go with what I could afford at the time.   I would have preferred the DS as it is supposed to be even better for diabetics.  But the RNY is certainly doing the job for me.  I am not on any diabeties meds anymore, but I do seem to have some hypoglycemic problems going on.  I do not know if DSers have that problem too?  Look forward to some ont he answers you get.  You might want to go to the DS forum and ask again.

the something that I can do.

Why are you interested now?  Are you contemplating a revision?  Helping someone else with their research?

The DS is just short for Duodenal Switch or Biliopancreatic Diversion with a Duodenal Switch. It's the most effective WLS and one which allows the most normal eating post op.

I had RNY for 28 years, kept the weight off for 15 of the 28 before gaining it all back. I got a revision to DS in Sept. 2008. I've lost the excess weight and am maintaining the loss with little or no effort.

You can learn all about the DS here: www.dsfacts.com

I was within a week of having an RNY done in December of 09. I then came across a heated discussion on the DS. It was exactly what I wanted. I knew I was just settling for RNY because I am fat.

After much research and seeing many revisions from RNY to DS I knew it was the right choice. I just recently scheduled my DS for next month.

The reason I chose DS is:

1. The highest cure rate of my diabetes
2. No stoma or bypassing my stomach
3. The highest rate of keeping the weight off long term.
4. It works into my lifestyle

Lap band you have a foreign body (Band) which can slip or erode. I didn't like the idea of needles to get fills.

I am happy with my choice. If you really want to get the low down go to www.dsfacts.com There is tons of info there.

My two sentence version of the difference is - you choose the DS over the RNY if you have  fat tooth .  If you can see yourself happy drinking shakes made with half and half ...the DS is for U .  If U love Ur desserts and buffets and full-fat cheese  the DS is for U .

Th RNY requires U to live on a diet the rest of your life . Its not an ONEROUS diet ..but if you go back to your former way of eating you WILL regain.

On the other hand the DS has even more long term vitamin requirements .

I disagree with this statement.

Long term RNYers will actually rival DSers pill-per-pill vitamin-wise.  The RNY surgeons just won't tell you that.

If you love desserts...no matter what surgery you have you will need to watch the simple carbs or regain.

DSers have a sleeve and not everyone has to supplement with shakes.  I am only 4 months out and can eat enough protein that I don't have to drink shakes..thank goodness.  Drinking half and half..where do you get this stuff?  Yes a few people like that, but by no way is that required to have the DS.

I am more that 50% to goal and love the feeling of not having to diet.  You are right on with that one.

You don't HAVE to eat high fat. We just don't absorb 80% of fat, you CHOOSE whether you eat it or not.

Hey there!

The Duodenal Switch has been performed for over 20 years and not done by many surgeons due to it's level of difficulty. We like to consider it the "Platinum Standard" of WLS because it has the best statistics for losing the weight and keeping it off in the long run. It also has the best stats for curing diabetes.

We can pretty much eat anything, as long as we follow a few simple rules:
1) At least 100 grams of protein a day
2) Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day
3) Take our vitamins
4) Yearly blood work

I guess the only really thing we should stay away from is too many carbs and that is really just in the first year. Some DS'ers get gassy when they eat food made with white flour. We don't have a pouch, we have a fully functioning stomach, just smaller. We don't dump because our pyloric valve is still in tact.

Please see www.dsfacts.com and www.duodenalswitch.com for more info. I haven't had any complications and have easily lost 115 pounds in one year. I am very happy I chose the DS because it lets me eat a very normal diet and has fixed my metabolism from years of dieting. Oh yeah, we also get to eat all the fatty foods we want because we only absorb about 20% of the fat we eat. That means that we don't have to eat low fat, chemical-laden, tasteless foods. Bring on the bacon, cheese, burgers, steaks, butter and heavy whipping cream in my coffee! My cholesterol is 114 and shocked the hell out of my nutritionist.

Good luck!
Jules
