Recommended doses of vitamins?
I've been looking for a list of what doses of various vitamins are recommended for us. My doctor and NUT gave me specific amounts for several things, but there are others they didn't mention. I'm concerned about Vitamin C, and haven't been able to find a source stating how much I need in a day. I'm currently getting 600 mg, but am concerned that it may not be enough.
Thanks!
Thanks!
The ASMBS recommends 200% of the RDA of most things, including vitamin C. The RDA is only 60 mg, so if you're getting 600 you are getting more than the recommended amount. It should be noted that the Vitamin C foundation recommends much more than that.
The ASMBS recommends 1500-2000 mg calcium citrate, 18-27 mg iron, and 350-500 mcg B12 if you use a sublingual.

Are you taking ionic iron? If so, most likely the dose of C (200mg of C for every 30mg of ionic elemental iron) is generally enough to deter deficiency. Remember that many ionic irons are ferrous salts (ie ferrous sulfate, fumarate, gluconate) and the amount such as 325mg ferrous sulfate is NOT the elemental amount of iron. That would be 65mg of elemental iron, so 400mg of C would be the corresponding dose. Just making sure. Kay? Good. Moving on.
Now, deficiency is rare, but not unheard of. I have seen a few RNYers with Scurvy post-op.. but I don't think they were iron-takers (and thus not taking C with their iron) so that could have lead to their deficiency state. So it's good to make sure you are getting C, but it's not like B12, iron, or D where we are inheritantly GOING TO GET deficient.. just that it HAS happened, but isn't likely. Make sense?
