Can someone tell me if this sounds like a blockage , stricture or food poisoning?

went to breakfast with a friend of mine on friday.

I knew i wasnt going to eat like i used to ....so i thought protein....
i ordered egg white omlet with lox and goat cheese,...
three things i ate already and were ok for me ....
well eggs were fine so was cheese
but the lox i took two bites and knew something was wrong.
i possibly didnt chew the last bite of salmon ..because it tasted funny
I only had two tablespoons of food total

then it started ...i threw up on the way home...
then few hours later again....
i tried to eat yogart it came up too
rest of day and night i tasted the salmon in back of my throat and continued to vomit violently and nothing would stay down
i called my doctor at 6;00 am after a miserable night.
he said to try liquids only and if it didnt go down go to hospital...
i tried mylanta as he suggested and some water and some jello
they all came up.....
i decided to drink nothing to let my stomach settle
i feel better this morning but still not sure if it is going down...
will call my doctor again tommorrow if i am not successful getting any fluids...as that is serious

I think you need to go back to a liquid diet for a day or so, you are swollen from the throwing up. I tend to think it's because you are still relatively close out from surgery.

While I have the Lap Band and you had RNY, what you experienced is not that uncommon.  We sometimes get complacent about foods we have eaten successfully and our surgeries can play fickle games with us.

That's pretty fast for food poisoning to kick in. Lots of things taste funny this early out from surgery. So I'm not terribly worried about that. You're describing an experience common to many of us that early out.

You might want to reconsider going to the ER, though, because it sounds to me like you're already about 24 hours behind on fluids and well into dehydration. This will make you MORE nauseated, which prolongs a vicious circle. I would not wait another day. I would go now and get a bag or two of fluids.

Salmon was the only thing the first two year out that ever gave me a problem and caused me to throw up.  I happened twice.  And I knew it was because I didn't chew it well enough.  So just  give Salmon a break and when you do try it again chew chew chew, be conscious of your actions while eating it.  I remember those few episodes and still at  4 plus years out, ( i love salmon so I do have it) but I stay attentive while eating it and make sure I chew it well.

Feel better.

Hi Diana!
Sorry you are feeling so badly. You probably shouldn't wait if you're not getting in more fluids than a half bottle. Salmon is a very difficult thing for me to eat. I have never been sick but if I eat it too fast or don't chew slowly, it drags and hurts my stomach. Please don't wait too long...the doctor said to go yesterday if fluids didn't stay down...right? Take care of yourself.    Connie

lets say you were all right...i was better sunday and monday but about 11 am on tuesday I experienced the worst most horrible pain ever in my life it was so bad instead of going to my surgeons hospital i went to my local one...They wouldnt take me righ away although i was crying and panting and hysterical. They made me wait like hours then took thirteen hours total to get me three tests xray, ultrasound, and ct scan. They thought at first it was either gall bladder or blockage. ER doctor said it was blockage. by 10 pm i was vomiting up blood and bile it was so traumatizing . my gastro surgeons( my angels) had me transfered to centra state and they siad they would scope me and possiblely do surgery. I went in and by 5 am they fixed me ,,,it was a seperation of my intestine most likely caused by days of vomiting....it was so scary and experience . And beleive it or not I do not regret my surgery still....but my friend mark just made me cry asking why did i do it ,,,,and i am crazy. I am crying now ,,,,I know i did things wrong buy not GOING to my doctor on monday thinking i was all better....i am sad and confused right now but but at least recovering now...
Thanks for all your advice last week ....i should have followed it though.....
I am just going to move forward slowly and carefully now .....
I am hope alone today so if anyone cares to comment i will welcome the disgussion ...
thank you again diana

Hey, Diana--

How awful for you that you had to suffer so much before they would take care of you.

I'm so glad to hear that the problem was found and cured;  hurray for your surgeons!

I'd just like to say that this is the first time I've EVER heard of someone suffering this type of injury post-op.  I hope you don't get to be afraid of every little ache and pain now!  Although, I'd probably be analyzing the heck out of everything myself!

Please take care of yourself, and keep us posted on how you are progressing.

Remember:  when you're post-op (any surgery), nap as needed!

Best wishes,

Wow Diana!
I'm so sorry you had such an awful time but I'm sure glad they found out what was wrong! Yes, slowly and carefully is best. I'm so glad you cared enough about yourself to make the medical folks listen to you. This could have ended so badly. Good for you! I'm so relieved to hear from you. I was worried and I know others were too. Happy to see you back. Now, sip, sip, sip and get some rest.       Connie
