I am considering this, and am wondering if anyone else has had it done post RNY and what they experienced?

I know two people that had this done...they aren't post RNY but I don't think that the RNY would effect the out come of the procedure.  Both of my friends had it done because of heavy bleeding and they both got relief.  Both barely get their periods at all anymore!!!  I am tempted to get the procedure done.  I am on birth control pills to alleviate my heavy periods and it would be nice to have this done and not worry about having to take a pill every day.

You have to be sure you won't be having any more babies, since the procedure renders your uterus incapable of carrying a pregnancy to term.  It does NOT serve as contraception, however, as you can GET pregnant after NovaSure - you just can't STAY pregnant.  In other words, it's impossible to carry a viable baby to term.  So my doc recommended getting my tubes tied at the same time OR using some very heavy duty birth control afterwards (like DepoProvera).

Can I still become pregnant after the NovaSure procedure?

Because NovaSure treats the lining of the uterus, your chances of getting pregnant after the procedure will be reduced. However, it is still possible to get pregnant if you’re sexually active. A pregnancy after an ablation is very dangerous for both the mother and the fetus, since the uterine lining would not be able to properly support fetal development. It’s very important to talk to your doctor about what birth control you will use after the NovaSure procedure.

You will still have to use a non-hormonal birth control, though, or get your tubes tied.  The pill encourages the endometrium to re-grow, so you can't take that (unless you're one of the rare few who do still get a period afterwards).  You also can't use Mirena or any IUD afterwards, because they need to embed in the endometrium.

Hi,
I did not have RNY but had the procedure done about 1 year after my Lap Band due to extremely painful and heavy bleeding, due to fibroids.

It has been wonderful, and would recommend it for a better quality of life.

Please feel free to PM me as it can get a little too much of TMI lol  and I will be happy to answer any questions that I can.

Hi there. I had it done November 2.
It has changed my life.

I had horrible painful periods. Clots. The works.

I had hoped that losing weight would help but after a year, and over 100 pounds gone, nothing changed.

Had the Novasure. It was breeze. In at 0630, home by 10. No pain at all.

I have not seen a drop of blood since. No more cramps. No more back pain. No more nuthin!!

I am trying to convince my sister to pursue it as she suffers like I did.

PM me if I can give you more info.

My mil had it done. Doc said if she had no bleeding for over a year, she would be home free. She started bleeding after 11 month so had to have a hystrecomy sp?

I am 4+ years post RNY... but that doesn't really have effect on novasure... Except that my reason for having it was due to the anemia that heavy periods were contributing to...  I still am anemic and I now go for iron infusions.

But I personally would not recommend novasure.  Per my experience...  It is marketed and sold as a alternative to hysterectomy.  If you have medical reasons for a hysterectomy and do not see a reason to keep your uterus then why bother.

I feel that I was more forced into the novasure... I would have preferred a hysterectomy at the time of the novasure but since I had no reasons not to have novasure, thats all my doc would offer.  All I can really say is to make sure you do your research into what novasure actually does. My experience is that I had the procedure in June 09, by January, I was having intense pain and swelling during my cycle but no periods.  As time progressed I also began to experience what I thought was dumping.  I started thinking that there was something wrong with my intestines.  I went to my PCM doc and because of the novasure they did not recommend gyno, instead i went through CT etc to try and evaluate my intestined...The decision was that I must be eating things that didn't agree or it was gas pains?  Then as I started keeping a food journal I realized it was occuring on a monthly cycle and did not matter what I ate.  I also began to experience intense cramping following ******!!!

Like I said prior to novasure there was no reason to explain anything ( biopsy, US) ... After novasure, my uterus had about 6 fibriods of varying sizes a few cysts and a pocket of WTF for lack of a better term (US, no bipsy because was too complicated to open, pathology)...  Of course my new gyno would not declare these things were caused by novasure...  But novasure basically burns the inside of the uterus...which then collapses onto itself and heals (asherman's syndrome, Post tubal ablation syndrome)... SO esentially you are sealing your uterus...if there are any spots of living tissue (ie in the cornuas where the tubes are or random spots that dont get destroyed) then the living tissue will continue to regenerate and shed as it is supposed to. If you had your tubes tied-- it can result in rupture, if not then that shedded tissue can go in your abdomen and develop endometriosis... Look into Post ablation complications in general, regardless of which procedure.  Novasure was developed, tested and considered effective based on the success of reducing or eliminating periods.. they have done very good at hiding the complications associated with the procedure...  There is also the risk of burns to the intestines etc, which if a dr does the procedure correcly should not happen, but do you want to risk losing a portion of your remaining intestines?

In Dec 10 I had LAVH- lap/vag hyst... plus the doc removed one cystic ovary.  In my opinion I had an easier recovery (less pain) from the hyst than the ablation... I had cramping the first day after the hyst and then that was all, a little tender but overall nothing... I did have messed up hormones for a few weeks but that was more due to the ovary...  After the ablation I had cramping  and spotting for about a month...honestly.  Of course then it just stopped.  The other part that really angered me, and I have outstanding insurance... is the costs associated with the procedures.  I had the novasure as an outpatient surgery under general... In total it cost about $20K to have it when you considered all the pretesting etc...  MY hyst was about 25K but was an overnight admission just in case there were complications due to medical history.  So cost effective it was not in my case...

I would definitely prefer a supracervical hystorectomy.  I am not making any decisions until  I talk to the gyno at the facility where my RNY was performed.  My Gyn was pushing Mirena IUD, and I do not want that.  He refused to check for fibroids, let alone even discuss hysterectomy.  That is why  Iwant a second opinion.  Another local gyno does ablation, but not Novasure.  He uses his own technique.  He does not like the Novasure method.
