Would you like a cup of coffee?
Hi Laura
yes, I'm going by my own experience here. I'm not saying it's my ideal way to live but there have been times when I've gone days and days of drinking nothing BUT coffee and I never got dehydrated.
so I just don't buy it.
now, the acid reflux I get. too bad!

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.
PM me if you are interested in either of these.

I actually read a scientific study (no, I have no sources to cite) that stated tha****er and caffeinated beverages have the same level of diuretic action.
that said, I don't drink coffee.... ewww yuck..... gross!
But I do have three cyrstal lights in a day, and they're all caffeinated.

I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
I drink it every day. I did stay away from it for 6 weeks after surgery because of the acidity. But I think the potential health benefits and personal satisfaction greatly outweigh any risks. A growing body of research shows that coffee drinkers are less likely to have Type 2 Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and dementia. They also have fewer incidences of cancers and heart rhythm problems. And for the chronically constipated (which seems to apply to a lot of us), stimulating colonic motor activity seems like a good thing to me.
As with everything else in life, it's best to consume it in moderation because drinking coffee in large amounts can be dehydrating. Just a cup or two, is not. I drink more than that (two BIG mugs a day), but I drink even more water to compensate.

A friend of mine gave up all caffeine as directed and 3 years later continues it. Me, well, that is a whole 'nother thing. I tried hard before surgery but it was looking like a prison term would be forthcoming if I gave it up altogether. I went back to having what we have always done. We mix regular coffee with decaf 1:1 when we buy it, then I have about 2 cups in the morning, three if desperate. I also use my creamer and don't count it because it is a necessity of life. I have had no trouble, but that is just me.
You are correct about the dehydration problem, that is nothing to take lightly. Dehydration also causes stalls in weight loss so if someone is going to have caffeine they need to plan to offset it.

Charlotte,
As long as you are following the plan that your Dr/Dietician gave you, you should be just fine.
Congratulations on your recent surgery.
Wishing you all the best in your journey,
Barbara
