Never experienced prejudice on this board until...
So, I've been told in the past that other's thought the main board was intimidating to post to. That some are harsh aganist posters, that there is prejudice running rampant.
I never experienced it first hand anywhere on this site. That is, until a few weeks ago. I discussed something I ate daily (Zone Perfect bar) with some group buddies of mine and was basically told that this one item I enjoy, which keeps me from eating other junk food, wasn't good for me and was "the size of a meal" and that "wow, I wouldn't eat thattttt".
You know what? I'm with MM and all the other bad girls out there....If a freakin Zone Perfect bar (which is about 200 cals, 7 fat, 15 protien, 22 carbs,100% natural) is going to completely sabotage my WLS then put a fork in me....I'm done.
Pleeeeeease, for a moment I was treated as if I had eaten a bunch of candy or drank a milkshake or something.
Well, I am a firm believer in the nutrition I have chosen for myself. I ALWAYS focus on protein first, I get as much fruits and veggies in as possible, every carb I ingest is of whole grain or whole wheat (and I don't intake much carbs). I am over a year out, over 175 pounds lost and still losing, exercise 3 times a week and watch/track every single thing that goes into my mouth including condiments.
Believe it or not, I actually let this discourage me for a few weeks, ruin my spirit, make me feel guilty all the time...for the first time since I'd been on this site I stayed away for weeks.
Well, I'm back now. I'm going to eat my Zone bars, enjoy them, and still lose weight suckas. If you can't deal with that...then wake up and realize that you will always not have the restriction you do now...you will not always have the desire not to eat...you will not always be filled up by 1-2 ounces of protein...you will not always be able to say no to something you really want. I had/have a food addiction. These bars KEEP me from getting candy....these bars help me feel satisfied so I don't go eating all that bad crap.
This is a LIFE long decision. This is a long haul. To never have anything but protein and veggies in your WLS diet is ridiculous and will make you crazy. If you think you can stick 100% to the diet, 100% of the time you are crazy. Come talk to me after you've reached a year out, have more capacity, more cravings and are tired of the same crap you've been eating for a year. Maybe a Zone bar might work for you to keep your cravings down.
Have a nice day. End rant.

I think it's good to have a special snack you save for times when you are very tempteed to eat something much worse. I have my snack...it's Breyers Carb Smart ice cream bars or Weigh****chers cookie dough ice cream sundae. They aren't the best snacks in the world and they are starchy and over processed but I don't care. I don't have them very often and they are better than the alternative.
I say if it has worked for you all this time (the way it works for me) then who cares what anyone says!!!

Don't get distracted by opinions my beautiful sista ... everybody has one ... don't let opinions get you down nor get you discouraged .. it is just a distraction and as my mom used to say a tactic used by fools...
I love Zone Bars and I love love love Oh Yeah Bars too ... I get them by the case at GNC and I have always one on me because I run and they certainly provide a good burst of energy after a hard run ... or I may get very busy and rather than miss a meal I can whip one out of my purse or I may just want to snack on something sweet... it takes me up to 2-3 days to finish off an Oh Yeah Protein Bar .. they are pretty big and tasty too ... I love 'em...
Keep on being you ... what you choose to eat is your business and no one elses .. you are an adult in charge of your own life choices ... If the bars Keep you away from Candy and satisfy you at the same time go for it ... whatever works ... the Zone Bars are very tasty and are an excellent source of protein ... and sometimes one just wants something sweet ... I love the Oh Yeah for sweet and crunchy LOL...
Wishing you nothing but the best on your journey...

Wow, Kim. WOW.
I wish I could say that I couldn't believe you'd been flamed for eating your Zone bar - but I know better. I am sorry you had to deal with that, and even sorrier it kept you from the boards for a few weeks.
I think if you look at 90% of the folks who are longer than 1 or 2 years out, they all have *something* they eat either everyday, or even every so often, that somebody would consider non-compliant. The poster above has her ice cream, you have your Zone bar, I just got done eating a TRUCKLOAD of those stupid Oh Yeah! protein wafers. My tummy hurt when I got done with those yesterday and I admit it wasn't a good choice, but you know what - it was a hell of a lot better than eating the bag of Snickers I would have eaten pre-op. Even at almost 2 1/2 years out, I'm still finding my way. I imagine I will continue to do so for life. (The Oh Yeah!'s will have to be ordered only on special occasions, I think!)
It sucks that you feel you have to justify your Zone bar, because you don't. It's nobody's business but your own. I eat several different protein bars (excluding the Oh Yeah!'s) that some here consider "bad" because of their carbs, sugars, whatever. I really wish I could care, but I don't. My body, my diet, my protein bars. Period. They are a better choice than candy or some other snack, they have protein in them, and they keep me from binging. So sad that others don't have enough of a life to keep them too busy to worry about another board member's eating plan. :shaking head:
I'm sorry Kim. I hope you're back to stay. And now, in your honor, I'm going to go eat 3 or 4 -gasp- Milk Duds =)

Yeah poor Amy.... she's been charbroiled a time or two.
I'm always a meanie, and I toasted her alive!

The BIG deal, I think, once you have chosen your surgery and had it done, is to:
A) Follow your surgeon's plan in the beginning
B) Modify over the long haul to adapt to your specific needs
C) Eat in a way that allows YOU to maintain what YOU want out of this surgery.
(and I think it's a good idea not to encourage new-ops to pig out on things that are bad for them)
I eat what I eat, and so long as I do not gain, and my health and labs remain good, who the freak cares if I eat kudos every single day of my life? Or cupcakes?
I hate the food police. They also do not have much fun. Life is for living.... live it!

Even amongst a supportive site like this one, there are those that antagonize us. If you found a snack bar or what ever it may be, that works for you then stick with it. Self-righteous ******** do crawl out of their hole somethimes. I'm glad you shared how you felt and that you're posting. In some ways being self righteous can be like a cross over addiction.
Girlfriend, I am with you! I have to bake and have an occasional sweet but have changed to ALL whole grains and natural low glycemic sweeteners, so that what I consume is a slow-burn protein and fiber-filled delight! Like your Zone bar--you choose that instead of a candy bar. Works for you. You lost 100 pounds. I think you'll be okay!
Some people have an all or nothing philosophy but this journey is not a diet or an exercise in deprivation. I have to live with my WLS for the rest of my life. Life is not black and white. Why should your choices be?
Calories in and calories out=weight loss success or failure. You can do the math and be successful.

I always say if it works don't fix it. I don't care if you are eating a real candy bar every day. It's your body and your choice and if you are happy with your weight and eating habits who am I to say?
I get in these ruts where I eat the same thing every day and then I get sick of it and find something else. What works for me may not work for anyone else. I pretty much allow myself to eat anything as long as it has enough protein in it or I can add enough. I avoid sugar and wheat because in the past when I ate those things I would get out of control and I don't care to test the waters and see if that has changed. But beyond that I have no foods that are off limit. I do watch my carbs, especially refined carbs but that is personal preference because I have found that is what works for me.
I have experienced negative reactions to my posts, although never about my choice of food. I just block and move on. There are too many good people here to let a few mean ones drive you off. The good does outweigh the bad here.
