After I went back for my 3 months, my doc said to get more of my protein from food now,  But i eat 4 - 5 meals a day, because I have low blood sugar. and I try to drink one protein drink a day and I have been losing steady.. LIke Price said all Drs are different..

I understand the thinking behind this but I don't agree with it. I have always had protein from drinks and I still do. I have a Syntrax Nectar Natural every day for my first meal. I think it IS normal food and works well for me. I'm healthy and have been at goal for awhile, no problems.

other than that, I try to mostly eat unprocessed foods.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Yes,
I went through the Bridges program and the RN that taught the nutrition classes (skinny *****!) tried to tell me that if I drink shakes I won't loose weight! I was shocked and said "how so"? She explained that they surmise that shakes won't keep us (the fat folks) full long enough and we will break our diets. So I let her off the hook (even though she deserved a real tongue lashing) and used my MediFast & other protien shakes both pre-op and post-op, despite her psycho-bull**** reasoning.
It's your life, and it's your lifestyle change. You have to do what you are comfortable doing. Just make sure you try to adhere to the protein vs carbs guidelines they give you and the rest will be fine.
Take care.... Craig

You're a VSG, you're not going to have malabsorption issues. While I'm not a doctor, nutritionist or offereing medical advice, I personally would not advocate shakes once you are back in the solid food stage and meeting your protein requirements. In my humble opinion, they would just be added calories.

I hate protein shakes so I would gladly follow that advice.  I do know that the protein in drinks in inferior to real food.   I would only use them if I couldn't eat solid food for some reason on a temporary basis.

I have heard of a lot of Drs. discouraging getting protein from drinks.  Real food is more filling and it is better nurishment.

Hey, if you can get your protein from sources outside of protein shakes, more power to you! You may find that you run into food aversions, though, and to get the protein in, the shakes might be your only option. You won't know for sure until you're post-op, though. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you're one of the luckier ones.

Kaiser told me no shakes as well but gave me little advice about how to get 60 gms of protein in daily when I could eat less than 300 calories a day.  I decided to ignore their shake advice, drank them until I could get all my protein from food, and now I have them on days when I'm in the car most of the day.

I could refer you to one of his earlier patients. She's coming up on 10 yrs, weight is still lost. She does 3 shakes per day, always has.

Her protein keeps her in the driver's seat with food.

Your doctor is an idiot.

I'm glad you posted here.  I just hope you will listen to the experts here.

I do a shake a day.  My surgeon wants his patient to stay with shakes if they can.  I just can't get the required amount of protein down every day without one.

There are so many doctors (and patients) saying so many things it can make your head spin.

My way works for me... I hope indeed what you choose to do works very well for you!
