Goal weight????

I went by the last time I felt good about myself, YES I remember that weight number. My surgeon doesnt set a goal weight although he does ask that you do your best to get to a goal by such and such a date based on the number YOU pick. Most of his patients have done it and a few have actually done more than he asked. I know my surgeon is listed as a female but changed surgeons since the original one left the MTF I was going to.
My surgeon picked a goal weight he felt I could achieve. I gave him "the look" like he was crazy. He was right though, I reached his goal weight in less than 9 months.
IMO pick a goal that is realistic. A normal BMI isn't the end all, be all as so many try to achieve "that" number then feel bad if they don't.

How did you decide on your goal weight? Did your surgeon set it? I am just wondering because my surgeon has never said any kind of a goal I just thought before surgery I wanted to be 160 and I made that my goal weight, but now Im kinda wondering if I still like that number....So how did you decide? I am almost exactly your height and weight, although I've put on some pounds over the last month and the doc is trying to figure out if it's just "bounce back" or thyroid related. The mid 170's is where I am most comfortable, although at first I thought wanted to go back to 155 like I was before I got pregnant with my last daughter. The thing is, in the mid 170's I wear the same sizes I used to wear at 155. And though I probably could get down there, it would mean giving up all carbs and not being able to ever indulge and that's not a life I want to live. I more comfortable here, just eating things I want in moderation and not making foods "good" and "bad".
Personally I think you have to decide where you are comfortable and healthy and all the charts be damned. But, my surgeon never set a goal weight for me either and encouraged me to just focus on my health so maybe it's different for folks who have a goal set for them? I don't know...
Anywho, good luck on your journey, whatever you decide=)

I didn't actually pick a "goal" weight. I did pick where I thought I'd land... but went well below it.
For those who've been significantly obese for a number of years, our bones become more dense and heavier to support our weight, and our muscles also become larger to move everything around. As a result, our BMI may not accurately reflect our size, given all that density.
As a result, my actual GOAL was to get my body fat down to 22% (an athletic range for my gender and age). I'm hovering in the 20% - 21% range at this point.
I weigh more than friends the same height who wear the same size and have the same measurements, but it's because of my bone and muscle density. If I'd set me heart on a scale goal, I could be in big trouble.
See if your surgeon can check your body fat content. If that's in the healthy range, skip the BMI. It's a garbage number for most of us.

I did not want to go through WLS and still be overweight.
Plus, all the stats are based on "excess weight" lost which is defined as the weight you need to lose to reach a normal BMI. I wanted to be able to compare my success apples to apples.
