The difference between your pouch and stoma

For those of you that have had an RNY...What is the difference between a pouch and a stoma and can eating and drinking at the same time stretch your pouch or stoma?

The pouch is a small section of your original stomach. It is generally about the size of an egg and does, as natural stomach....have the capacity to stretch. Which is a good thing. Because you can't exist with an egg sized never to expand stomach. The stoma - technically called an anastomosis - which simply means a surgical made connection - is the opening the surgeon creates by attaching a new segment of your small intestine to the newly created pouch......bypassing the leftover stomach and it's original small intestine. That new stoma is made about the diameter of a nostril to start.....and thank God that dialates as well or you would not likely survive. That very very narrow opening is why it takes 45 minutes for a protein shake to trickle through in the early days/weeks (postop swelling can close it almost completely off). The stoma is generally the structure that loses it's restriction. Chronic overeating of dense food can force the stoma to stretch and once stretched it does not return to it's original size. Eating and driniking together are not likely to stretch it - nor is carbonation (soda and beer). Drinking while eating will wash food through more quickly than eating alone......and that does lead to earlier hunger and likely more eating. So it's important to not wash out the nutrients and density of food before your body can process it. Susan

I'm confused here---how CAN one 'wash out the nutrients' of one's food? Very little is actually absorbed in the stomach, even pre-op. Is ANYTHING actually absorbed in the pouch?

The only things absorbed in the stomach (or pouch) are alcohol and aspirin.

If you eat slowly and don't drink anything while or after eating, the food stays in the pouch and keeps you feeling full.  When you start drinking again, you can feel the food empty out of your pouch and that gives you room for more food.  I have waited three hours after eating before drinking and stayed very full feeling.

Here is a link to a video that explains about eating and drinking.

Think of the stoma as the bottom of the funnel.
