I haed my first post-op drinks at about 22 months out. I am not a big drinker to start with and I think it put an end to me drinking more than one at a time. Alcohol hits you harder and faster now. If you really want a drink, sip it slow and have water available too. Wine or a wine spritzer will be more than enough alcohol to try at first. And you may want to try in the privacy of your own home to see how it affects you. Keep in mind too, that some drinks that aer made with fruit juice can also cause you to dump - lots of sugar in juice.

With all that being said I also know some post-ops that drink more than fish and do fine, no effect at all.

Everything Debbie said. Try a glass of wine at home so you can see the effects. I will drink one glass of wine over the course of an evening.....or 1 beer.....but I made the mistake of trying hard liquor after my doctor cleared me and it was awful. Particularly if you're associating drinking with dating.....alcohol will hit harder and all the effects (including impairing your judgement will be increased)...so tread carefully. Drink with trusted friends to determine your limits.......Susan

I think Debbie is right.  Try one at home and see how you make out.  The only other thing is don't forget to have a good time on dates.  It's more important to be with people and enjoying your life than just having a drink.

Thanx for the tips. now I KNOW why I havent tried alcohol yet. I hate wine but I think I might stick to non alcoholic drinks for a while. Its hard to be in a social situation and not drink. I used to like the fuzzzy navel made with peach schnappes and orange juice. I dont know how I would tolerate that now, especially with the orange juice.

That would be *really* high in sugar - I wouldn't opt for it.

Do you all have Woody's in the States?  They make a 99 calorie drink that's delicious.

Too bad.

A low cal drink that I often have when out is a shot of vodka in club soda over ice with lime.  Of course, depends on how you react to the carbonation in the club soda, but I find this to be a refreshing treat.

That does sound refreshing!  I'm surprised that you can handle the carbonation?  I thought beer and carbonation would be out forever, hmmmm

Well, keep in mind I'm over 5 years out - small sips and the carbonation doesn't bother me.  Long-debated issue on whether or not we *should* drink anything carbonated - I personally haven't had an issue with that, though my consumption is minimal. :)
