Paleo Diet...5000 calories a day and losing weight!!
I suggest you read Gary Taube's book "Why We Get Fat".
Lots of great information in there about carb/protein/fat metabolism and why the typical high carb/low fat diet pushed as a weight loss mechanism is making us (as a country) FATTER.

Bingo!
I really try to not push Taubes' books (only because it makes me sound like a zealot sometimes).. but you beat me to it on this one! Yes, I find (for me) carbs in any form = fat gain or no loss.. My husband has recently made the switch to a low carb lifestyle despite being 44 & lean just due to his lipid panel. He's retesting in a month to see where he's at. Triglycerides are directly linked to carb intake, and his intake was pushing med-high for a while. He already reports he's waking with energy and not getting the slumps during the day like he used to.. he likes it for that alone.
I also highly recommend his other book Good Calories, Bad Calories- but Why We Get Fat is a much easier and faster read and covers the same basic stuff, our local library had both. I just really appreciated that for the first time SOMEONE explained the actual metabolic and hormonal mechanism of obesity.. that it is NOT as simple as excess calories in = gain. I knew this, but didn't know why until I read it. Neither one is a "diet" book, they just explain the processes involved in carb metabolism and it's effect on our bodies.. should be required reading, seriously.

Yes, Good Calorie/Bad Calorie is a good book but VERY science based and a bit dry in sections. I think it would be more difficult for the average non-science background person to read....that's why I rarely recommend it.
When I follow the principles outlined in the books I do not crave carbs and have a VERY easy time maintaining my weight; when I don't, well.....
Right now I'm in "don't" mode, post-vacation. That is going to change starting TODAY.

I have looked at the Paleo diet and while I don't follow it or Atkins, either, religiously,I have found that any kinds of carbs, even "healthy" onws, whole grains included will stop my loss.
Conversly,I can eat all the meat and full fat items I want, including *bacon* gah! and full fat milk, cheese and yogurt, plus a tremendous number of eggs and I lose .
And,no,my triglicerides are NOT out the roof from these items. The idea that dairy and eggs in their natural form is "bad" is seriously outdated information.
