Food stuck feeling, need advice

I'm 10 wks post op and had something extremely painful happen over the weekend. I made the mistake of having 3 bites of a meatball sandwich. I've been chewing my food very well since surgery. About 10 minutes after my few bites, I had horrible pain in my chest/esophagus area. I can't imagine that I ate too much, so I must have not chewed properly. I couldn't believe how painful it was. I finally vomited and had instant relief. For the veterans out there, how often can I expect this to happen? What's a good way to alleviate it immediately? I'm afraid this will occur again after I eat solids again.

On a positive note, I've lost almost 40 lbs since surgery and feeling much healthier!

Thanks

Eat the meatball, leave the bread out of the equation.

It only happens to me if I eat bread or eat too quickly.

Letting it "urp" back up is the quickest way to alleviate the pain.

Thanks Lynn!  At this point, are you able to eat any bread?  Unfortunately, I love my carbs and hope that at some point I will be able to eat bread.  I'm a picky eater and am having trouble figuring out foods that I am able to eat that won't make me sick.  Congrats on your weight loss!

At your stage, it's all trial-and-error.  What works for one person is NOT good for someone
else.

I can eat crackers, or a piece of toast, but heavens forbid I should eat a flour tortilla or some
Wonder Bread!  It just balls up and I am miserable.

Thanks for your kind words!

meatballs and burgers are still too dense for me at 18 months out.  I dont eat doughy breads either.  Walking helps a lot, which is really hard because u want to curl up in a ball when it hits.  Quite frankly, sometimes the only way to get rid of the pain is to throw it up.

Lynn hit the nail on the head. I was thinking the same thing after reading your post. I'm about 10 months out and very seldom have any bread.  Not because I can't eat it but because I'm always trying to get my proteins in and by the time I eat my proteins, I don't have the room for the bread. And the chewing part is very important, I used to forget all the time and paid the price so now I've learned and don't have it too much any more.

Thanks for all of the sound advice.  I think I will be much more cautious in the future.  I let a craving get the best of me and paid the price.  Hopefully a little bread will be ok down the road a bit!  I guess you learn a lot through trial and error

Thanks for helping me!

Thanks Barbara!  I honestly felt like I was dying too, that's why I'm so afraid of it happening again. I felt out of control, not fun.  How many times has this happened to you?  I can't imagine it occuring at a party or event...

I had my surgery over 3 yrs ago and I still barely eat bread and hamburger's are out of the question. I do the cracker thing as well.
The 1st time that happened to me was with chicken breast which I still have to be very careful with. I thought I was gonna die, LOL.
It's just trial and error with everyone
.

I am not afraid of tomorrow,
for I have seen yesterday
and I love today......
