Yet another pre-surgery liquid diet rant... I got FOUR weeks!
That isn't remotely healthy. She would have been suffering from protein deficiency going into surgery, which is dangerous. Her recovery would have taken longer than it should have, had she been well nourished going into surgery.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

Yep my surgeon is old school so I had 30 days of liquid diet. Not just liquid but skim milk for 3 "meals" a day, all I could drink in 15 min. Oh and all the calorie free other drinks I could get down the rest of the day. About 1/2 way thru I gave in and ate a slice of swiss cheese once a day for 3 days, I figured it was thick milk! It's doable but sure no fun!

I like both the docs there, they are just old school, wish they'd lighten up with the silly diet tho. The first few days were pure hell then I kinda got used to it. I used Davinci sugar free flavorings to add a little zip to the skim milk. About the 3rd week I went a little crazy and had to eat something, had a slice of swiss cheese for 3 days in a row, then regrouped and got back on track. I felt very good about accomplishing it, made me feel like I could do most anything I had to to be a success with the surgery. Unfortunately that was not to be, the band was just a poor choice for me since I already ate less than 1000 calories a day and couldn't do much exercise because of health issues. So there wasn't anything to change after surgery and nothing I could do to increase activity so I lost a whopping 20 lbs. woohoo! They are awesome docs tho and care very much about their patients.
Wow I love my surgeon more and more the more stories I hear! I was not forced to do any liquid diet at all with exception to no solids for 24 hours or so prior to surgery. My surgeon simply asked that I stick to a bland diet high in protein and low in fat and carbs for a couple weeks prior to the surgery which was totally doable. I can tell you that there is no way in hell I could have done 28-30 days of liquids only whether it be protein shakes or milk, I call that crapola! lol And I whole heartedly agree that if I could stick to that kind of diet for a month prior to surgery then there really would be no need for the surgery in the first place!
Best of luck to you though, you will definitely need it!

I did six weeks of liquids and one low cal veggie meal a day prior to my surgery. It wasn't required, but I was over 500 lbs and had to lose some weight before my doc could do my revision. That was the fastest way for me to lose enough weight prior to surgery. The first 4-5 days were the worst, after that things were manegable, not fun but not horrible. I also told my husband I wasn't cooking again till I could eat too. Poor guy ate a lot of Hamburger Helper and Mac & Cheese before and immediately after my surgery.
