Bowel Control

Hi all,

I have searched this topic and don't see anything that comes close to the nasty issue I am having.

I will be 3 years out from RNY in January, 2012. I am maintaining my weight fine, have no other health issues other than this.

About every couple of weeks I have a problem with bowel control. I usually have no warning, just suddenly I have to go. Usually I make it in time but this is the third time I did not get to the toilet in time. It is incredibly embarrasing. As soon as I stood up to get to the ladies room I had diarrhea.

Anyone else have this issue?

What did you eat in the last 24 hours?

It happened this morning after eating about 1/4 of a sausage and ham omelet. And it is usually in the morning after eating. Perhaps I should start documenting what I am eating and looking for a pattern.
Thanks for the thought.

Absolutly you need to food journal.  For DSers it could be too much fat and not enough calcium (and that could be the same for RnY'ers) but I am sure they are going to come along and help you figure that out.

Are you on any medications?

Uncontrolable diarrhea in RNY folks is often related to dumping, but you haven't mentioned any other dumping symptoms (racing heart, sweats, cramping). This could be an unrelated bowel disorder too though, so start with your doc and ask about a referral to a GI specialist familiar with WLS.

I am as far out as you are and I do that if I get to much of CERTAIN kinds of fat.

Most of the time I pretty careful, but once in awhile I eat something I really shouldn't indulge in and WHAM here I go.

Good luck.  And yes do a food journal and you will probably figure it out.

Thanks all for your thoughts. It does sound like dumping but I do not get any of the other symptoms.I will be documenting my food intake and see if I can figure this out.

I too have this happen to me. At least once a month. I have noticed that is a week after what would be my period, ( a guess since I have had a hysterectomy.) I think there may be a truth to the increased fat, as I tend to 'cheat' or splurge more that week. i have also thought about my water intake, thinking maybe i was dehydrated. The food journal is probably a good idea... i will have to look in to that too!

                                  Diarrhea

Ooooh, LAWD!!!   The dreaded dookie dance.

Been there.   Before I learned how to control it I used to keep extra underwear in my desk at work.

What worked for me was putting myself in a regular morning routine.   I get up and have coffee with skim milk and that usually stimulates things to get moving fairly quickly, usually before I can finish the second cup.   I give myself plenty of time to go before leaving home.  That way I'm not surprised by an urgent need.  I can pretty much predict what time of the day I'll have a bowel movement now.

Just in case though, whenever I go somewhere, the first thing I do is scope out the ladies room, especially if I'm going to be eating.
