Does anyone think the Lap Band will eventually be recalled?

I am just wondering, with something having so many complications and minimal success with a lot of people, will it ever be recalled?

If so what happens? All bandsters have to go back to the OR for removal?  If thats the case the companies that make them better be handing out alternative weight loss surgery gift certificates.

I don't know if it will be recalled but I really wonder why surgeons are still performing that surgery and why insurance companies are still paying for it.

Well, yeah, for the doctors.  But how does it make money for the insurance companies?  They pay for the lap band surgery and ideally patients would lose weight and get healthier so the insurance companies would then save money on obesity related health problems later on.  But since so many patients do not lose much weight, they don't get that benefit.  And since more than half of patients need their band removed or replaced later on, the insurance company ends up paying for a second surgery.  I can't see how the band saves them any money.  Seems like it's likely to just end up costing them more.

But how does it make money for the insurance companies?

The insurance companies are putting that one WLS per lifetime clause in the policies now. They save money and the patient is screwed.

Even if they won't pay for a revision, don't they end up paying for complications?  And if a patient doesn't lose weight, then the insurance company is still stuck paying for their diabetes, sleep apnea, etc. right?  I don't see how it helps the insurance company to spend money for a surgery that usually does not work.

IMO the insurance companies and the phamacy companies are bed buddies. They make money together. Take birth control pills. When I was in Kuwait I could walk into any pharmacy and buy my bc pills for the equivalent of $10 a month. Here, it is a $20 copay. $20 here for the exact same thing I was paying $10 for there. And that's my copay. So how much is insurance paying? My bet? A big ole ZERO.
