I'm taking all the vits that the doc told me to, but I'm wondering if I'm lacking something.  My nails were never strong, but I've noticed recently they seem softer than normal.  While travelling, one tore a little bit into the nail bed when I was messing with my luggage and it seemed to happen really easily.

I don't know what the requirements are with a RNY but with a DS i just figure I need at least 2 times the recommended dosage on any vitamin. I can tell when I don't have enough calcium because my nails get soft. I take calcium 3 times a day. I also have a vit D deficiency so I load up there as well. Are you taking your calcium at least 2 hours before or after your iron? If not you may not be getting any benefit from your iron.

ETA: Also, have you compared your doctor's recommendations against www.vitalady.com? Most surgeons are good at what they do, cutting. But they do not have enough understanding of the vitamins.

Yeah, I take a centrum multi twice a day and calcium citrate 3x day and an iron before bed.  Also take sub lingual b12 every other day and B50 complex plus a dry vit d  once a day.  Don't have any spots or anything on my nails so maybe I've just been harder on them lately.

I get my labs done in a few weeks so I'll see what shows up.

Mine are soft too and I am taking biotin.  When my daughter had wls, she went through the same thing.  She also lost a lot of hair, but eventually both nails and hair got back to normal.

Just keep taking the vitamins and I would add biotin if you are not already.  You might mention it to your nutritionist at your next appointment just to make sure.

Pretty normal a few months out of surgery to get weak nails and hair loss.  It's been explained to me as a reaction to trauma of surgery and your body not able to spend any extra nutrients on things like hair or nails.  Should pass in a few months.
