Is Your Pet Obese?

We have two cats. One is overweight and the other isn't at all. We're feeding the overweight one a measured amount of high quality food - the minimum that's suggested for her ideal weight - but she's still a fat kitty. Interestingly she has zero interest in anything other than kibble.

I recent'y found of that my 5 year old cat weights in at 18 pounds.  I don't feed her table food...She just got fat after she was fixed.

My dog is obese.  She is 13 years old and we tried to make her lose weight and now we are just letting her live her life before she goes.  She lost a lot of weight about 2 years ago she lost so much weight and almost died and we found out she had a mass in her stomach.  We do not know what happened because now she has gained all her weight back and more.

My dog is pear shaped when he sits down and has a roll that flops over his haunches. He's about 15 pounds over weight and it makes me mad because it's not my fault. I have a neighbor tha****ches him for me during the day, takes him for walks and plays with him. Well he's a nice old guy but he feeds my dog people food ALL DAY LONG!

I've repeatedly told him not to, told him that the dog is fat, told him that the vet says he needs to lose weight to no avail. He says ok I won't feed him but then will make the dog a plate of spaghetti when he has lunch or feeds him bacon and eggs in the morning or other ungodly things like bologna and hot dogs. And it's not like the dog doesn't have food and treats because I've provided both in an effort to stem the people food but the old guy just won't listen.

Sadly I've had to now tell the guy he can't take the dog any more because he won't listen and not feed my dog. Even with all of the running and playing my boy does it can't compete with bacon and plates of spaghetti.

With 7 cats and 3 dogs, not a single one is overweight. In fact two of the cats are UNDERweight. We do have one who tips the scales at 12 lbs at one year old but he's not overweight, he's a BIG cat.

Domestic cats are similar in size to the other members of the genus Felis, typically weighing between 4 kilograms (8 lb 13 oz) and 5 kilograms (11 lb 0 oz).[19] However, some breeds, such as the Maine Coon, can exceed 11 kilograms (25 lb).

The two that are underweight barely tip the scales at 6 lbs and we know they are too skinny...one of them is 10, the other 13 and we feed both of them extra food...but feeding one, means they all indulge. I just make sure the 13 yo gets her own plate. The others share two plates between the six of them.

The three dogs are all still puppies and are a healthy weight according to the vet. The only food they get is there dry food and a training treat...we are still potty training and leash training.

NONE of them get human food

If we have leftovers we don't want, it gets thrown away not fed to our pets.

RNY on 08/19/09 with
None of my pets are obese.

I have one son who is obese, but he choses to not lose the weight. His wife is having issues with the thought of losing him so he keeps himself at the weight that they are both happiest at, while seeking treatment for them both. She just had a baby so things are all mixed up for her right now.

I have one cat who tends to get fat for a while, then she will go on the great mouse hunt and slim down.

When I was home my first night after my RNY she brought me a live mouse and let it loose in my blankets. I'm guessing she thought it would make me happy and she was trying to say she missed me. I screamed and levitated out of bed. Couldn't get into bed without help, couldn't get out of bed without help, unless there was a live mouse running straight for me...lol.

My animals all eat table scraps, which is good since I tend to leave a lot of scraps. Yet they seem to be a normal weight. The oldest cat and the oldest but smallest dog are spayed. Now I gotta spay the youngest cat and the youngest dog. Especially since the dog had a litter of puppies on the feather mattress topper on my bed six months ago. I sure miss that feather topper...lol.

Met my first goal, met my second goal, met my surgeons goal. Now I have a new goal!

We currently have 4 cats down from 6. Three of them are a litter, Will, Penny and Judy they are 15.  Penny has always been our smallest. Judy always our largest. Will falls right into the middle. Every time we would bring them to the vet they would say Penny needed to GAIN weight and Judy Lose weight. The vet would tell us Judy's life would be shortened if she did not lose weight. Well Judy has been fine. She is a big cat ! She topped out at 21lbs. she is now down to 14. She has hyperthyroidism, but is the most nimble, can jump farther and looks great!
They have all been self feeders of dry food. At one point we changed food due to Judy's weight. Penny lost a pound which was huge she was teetering at 6lbs. Judy gained a pound. Judy is built just like her father and Penny just like her mother.
Our 4Th cats is our "Old Lady"  She is 17 and has some kitty dementia. She is constantly "waiting" for food. I have to constantly tell my husband, "No more Lactaid !" She still gets it all the time.
We have had several other cats. None of them were obese. Our biggest was 25lbs. He was a HUGE Maine Coon.

We have two golden retrievers who are getting up in years. One is 12 and the other is 9. The 12 year old has gained 10 pounds in the last year, and is about that overweight at this point. He has some arthritis that limits his activity, but I think the biggest culprit is that he sits directly underneath our 16-month-old baby at every meal, and baby's favorite thing is to drop food on the floor for the dog.

My daughter's mini dachound ( sp?) chihuahua mix is overweight. She changed the pet's food to a meat first with veggies and  no gluten products in it. The dog has lost 2 pounds, which is like maybe 25 for us.
And no more human food. The vet said unless it's unseasoned boiled chicken or lean beef, it's a no no.
And my daughter's not going to cook for her dog!
