My surgery is in 6 days and I am thinking of Sleeve instead of GB? HELP!
VSG on 05/30/12
I am so confused and feeling very unsure of what to do! I know I what to have WLS and for the past year I've was 100% sure I wanted a GB and now I am thinking maybe I should do the sleeve gastecomy instead. User surgery, less risk and wt loss potential is close to same.
I have 104 lbs to lose.. Any advise?

I agree. If you aren't sure by now so close to surgery, this could effect you the rest of your life in the decision you make. You have to be sure and at peace with your decision. None of the decisions we made were easy so I understand that. I don't think you would be able to get into see your surgeon this close to surgery to talk to him, but you could sure try. Jane

I have to agree with the mouse. If you've waited a year, what's a few more weeks until you know for sure which procedure you want? It would be nice if it was as easy to deal with as a bad haircut or dye job, but this is a huge deal.

I agree! This is a life changing operation, and the bypass is very very radical... I have 100 pounds to loose and I decided on the sleeve and had it on May 10th. I could not be happier with my decision. I am loosing weight and I don't have dumping syndrome or the many other things associated with the bypass. I would suggest you do more research and be 100% sure in whatever you decide, look at the pros and cons of both and decide which you are more ok with. Each surgery has its risks make sure you are ok with them, we don't want any of them to happen to us but it is a real chance we take. Good luck and let us know what you decide!
I was 13 days away from RNY when I put the brakes on. It was not easy to do, but boy am I glad I did. Sleeve has been a great surgery for me. I started out close to your starting weight (heighest weight was 244, 237 at time of surgery) and currently range from 139 to 141. I had a really good, experienced sleeve surgeon with documented outcomes on over 300 patients. You want to have someone good whichever procedure you choose. Good luck!
I agree with others, postpone surgery if necessary so you have time to make up your mind. You have to live with your choice for the rest of your life.
Why did you think you wanted RNY? I think I understand why you think you might want VSG instead.
what does your surgeon think would be best for you?
Have you talked to people that have had both surgeries? Maybe check out the RNY and VSG boards here. Have you attended any support groups so you could talk to people in person?

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.

Roxy,
I can only tell you my reasons. First, I'm a research nurse so I'm driven by data.
I chose RNY because the clinical data is there, It has a great success rate. I know VSG does, too, but there is less available data. It has only been reimbursable by most insurances for 2 years.
I also wanted malabsorption as well as restrictive. Yes, I am aware the malabsorption becomes less of an issue over time but I wanted it. I also want the incentive to really watch my carbs. I have 84 pounds to lose and I think this is right for me.
With that said, if you are unsure of your choice, WAIT. Do some more research and talk to your surgeon.
Best wishes to you!
Jill

I cannot imagine that anyone would advise you to just go ahead and do what you had planned. Everyone surely said wait until you are absolutely sure. Do more research and study until you are secure in what you have decided.
This is such a big step that you want to be sure you are doing what you will be happy with, and happy to live with, for the rest of your life.
You won't be the only one who has cancelled with just days (or hours) to spare. Your surgeon, his office staff, etc. want what is best for you. Your family and support system want what is best for you. Being uncertain and going forward without your whole heart in it is not the way to go.
I can't tell you what is best for you -- so I'm not doing that. I'm just saying don't be afraid to take all the time you need to make this decision. Don't let anyone push you into something you aren't 100% ready for.
Best wishes

There are people on the VSG forum that are in the upper 300's to 400 lbs and have been very successful with the sleeve. You do not have much to lose, it is VERY obtainable with the sleeve. But like everyone else said, be sure of what you want before you do it! I was 287 SW and now almost 4 months later I am 231, I am very happy I got the sleeve. Just go do some more research. Go read the VSG forum.
