Unsure and Sad

So, I am exactly 8 weeks out today.  I stepped on the scale this morning and have only lost 40 pounds.  I lost about 30 the first month and this second month have only lost about 10.  I see so many people on here that have lost so much more and I keep beating myself up about it.  For the lightweights, does the weight tend to come off slower since we don't have as much to lose.   I am pretty sure that I am following my food guidelines.  Still trying to get 60 grams of protein in daily.  Usually a max of 60 carbs.  Not drinking enough water on some days but trying my hardest.

Am I being totally paranoid?

Wt loss surgery is a process and takes time.  You can't compare your wt loss rate with others. Since your starting wt chart seems to be lower than most patients, you won't drop "buckets of pounds" every week. Just follow the protocol, drink you water (you say you problems with this), exercise, take supplements, and I'd highly recommend attending support group meetings.  You'll meet others who are either going wt loss at that moment, or others who had surgery some time ago.  Stalls at 2-3 months are not uncommon.  As you lose wt, your exercise needs to be increased to burn the same amount of calories you burned at a heavier wt.  You weigh less, and your muscles do not have to work as hard, so you have to adjust your exercise regimine.  DAVE

akjustagirl, you are a lightweight...and 40 lbs in 2 months is AWESOME!!!

It's not POUNDS, it's PERCENTAGES!
by Carolyn M.

Two people, both 6 months post-op. One has lost only 63 pounds and feels bad about her "slow" weight loss. The other has lost 96 pounds and thinks she's doing great.

They are both wrong.

Person A had only 105 excess pounds, so she has already lost 60% of her excess weight. She is actually ahead of the game at 6 months out and is on track to lose it ALL.

Person B had 265 excess pounds. At 6 months out she has only lost 36% of her excess weight. At this rate, she will end up retaining 28% of her excess weight, enough to keep her in the obese category.

See what I mean? Don't compare pounds to pounds, that's like apples and oranges.

Percent of excess weight lost: pounds lost divided by total excess pounds
Use a BMI of 25 as a goal weight

On track to lose it all is 25% lost after 2 months, 50% after 6 months, and 80% at one year.

Please note: These are averages. Your mileage may vary.

I'm a lightweight and by 8 months out has lost ALL my excess weight.

Join us on the lightweight board.

Are you exercising?? Rememberyou need to burn what you eat plus more. You have to be in a negative calorie situation to lose weight. Everyone's metabolism is different. Muscle burns more calories so build up your musclethrough exercise as you lose your fat. You are doing great . I'm sure it didn't take you 2 months to gain your weight and it won't take you to months to get if off. Your weight loss is great. If you are exercising remember muscle weighs more than fat. Don't get discouraged. Be consistent in your behaviors and they will pay off.

I know this is extremely hard to do, but...........try not to compare yourself with others who have lost weight too. Each one of us is an individual and our bodies will recover individualy also. As long as you are following your plan, then you can be proud of your success. It's even ok to slip and "cheat" a little....we're all human.

I just got home from the hospital from having respiratory failure and needed a trachia to help me breathe. My room mate also had a trachia. It seemed like it was taking forever for the doctor to decide to remove it, while my room mate seemed to be progressing faster than me. My physical therapist told me the same thing I have told you...about not comparing yourself with the progress of others. It is very hard to do, but she was right.

40 lbs in 8 weeks is excellent! That is 5 lbs a week! Chin up, honey. You are doing great!

Do you see the glass as half empty or half full? I say, what difference does it make--I paid for a full glass,so either way I am getting jipped!!!

You're doing great and the advice about % is spot on!

I've found that when my weight loss slows down my size starts shrinking.  I'm going through that right now.  Stuck at the same weight for about 1 month but I've gone from a size 12 to a size 8.  I think I'm firming up from exercise.  Go figure!

Eat right, drink your water and exercise.  It will come off.
