Parathyroid hormone?
Anyone have issues with their PTH or calcuim? My calcuim was low, vitamin D low, and Pth wonky. I repeated the tests ( they didn't repeat the vitamin d though) and it was bad again. I did notice a lump in my neck about the size of a grape ( large grape ) that is very mobile and moves around freely. Doctor is sending me for a CT scan - hopefully soon - but health care is slow here .
Just thought I would ask - I know D, PTH and Calcuim are like the three sisters- if one is off then they all go wonky sometimes,

If your vitamin D is below 80, you will not absorb calcium well (according to the Linus Pauling Institute), no matter how much you take. If you're not absorbing enough calcium, your parathyroid gland produces more PTH, which causes you to leach calcium out of your bones. That's so the calcium level in your blood won't get too low. Your body is very smart and if it has to choose between having calcium in your bones or calcium in your blood, it picks having calcium in your blood because if the calcium level in your blood gets too low, your muscles can't contract properly. Your heart is a muslce and if it can't contract, or beat, you will die.
So if your vitamin D level is too low or if you're not taking enough calcium or the right kind of calcium (calcium citrate), you may well end up with osteoporosis, but your parathyroid will do everything it can to keep your heart beating.
Obviously getting the CT scan to figure out what the lump is, is important. But getting your vitamin D level up to at least 80 is also important.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Thank you so much. I'm taking 5000 units of D3 a day. My doctor was pretty blase about it all ( well not the lump ) but I suspect he doesn't understand the whole connection and stuff. He didn't give me a reccomendation about the amount I should be taking but I was taking 1000-2000 before so I up'ed it.
He basically said" oh it would be higher now that you were in the sun more with the summer"
Sigh

You really need to see a endocrinologist with these issues. I had issues back in 1999 with my PTH and ended up with high calcium levels and had a PTH lobe taken out. Right away everything went back to normal levels the next day. Please make an appointment soon to see an endocrinologist, they will be able to help you. Good luck.
