Just trying to have reasonable expectations. I am 5'7 and 340lbs right now. What is the average weight loss with gastric bypass in the first 6 months? I know everyone is different but didn't know if there was an average i should expect? Me and my partner were talking about this tonight.

My first information session is in 2 days i am soooo excited!!!

A lot.

But it can vary so much person to person - do not expect ANYTHING .

Too many variables to say there is any "average wt loss" during any time frame. Patients tend to lose wt at a quicker rate during the first few months--AS LONG AS you follow protocol.  This is when following protocol helps establish habits for long range sucess from your surgery. Personally, I set "mini goals"--like tying my shoes with the bow in the middle--being able to cross my legs--having more room between my belly and the steering wheel of my vehicle--walking up stairs without breathing very hard, etc.  I will tell you to pay attention to one thing. Typically you're given a plastic breathing device prior to surgery, called an incentive spirometer. You blow into a tube, a plunger raises up a tube that is marked with numbers. Blow into the machine prior to surgery and take a Sharpie and mark your average.  After surgery try using this machine again. You'll be real lucky if you get half way to your preop average.  This device is designed to help expel fluids from your lungs. Failure to use this device 4-5 times a day post op, leads to fluid build up and a high potential for pneumonial or some other type of bronchial infection.  Save yourself the "hacking up a lung" and use this incentive spirometer. Several posts have been on OH in past weeks about coughing, bronchial infections, suspected cases of pneumonia post op--all due to the failure of the patient to use their incentive spirometer. DAVE

Dave, I don't think enough emphasis is put into the importance of the incentive spirometer.  We seem to be the few on OH that brings up the spirometer.  As you have said in the past, we were given our spirometers before going to the hospital to practice on.  Then in the hospital it was 10 times an hour and then continue after we got home.
So for all you newbies waiting to have surgery, use these spirometers to succeed in your recovery.  Jane

I never got the spirometer, I know about them because I am a nurse but was in the hosp for 3 days and did not get one

Just to emphasize Dave and Judy about the spirometers, I always have to especially use them because I have a lung disease. The nurse told me not only does it help the lungs and deter pneumonia, but it helps keep your temperature down. I don't know how it works but it sure did for me.

Hi Hislady,
Thank you for responding.  My husband has COPD and I ordered him one off of Amazon, they are very cheap or you can pick them up at any drugstore.  I swear by the spirometer for saving me from getting pneumonia.  To be honest, I was so terrified of getting pneumonia I used it even when it hurt so bad and had to cough.  But I didn't want back into the hospital.  Take care, Jane

I'm also 5' 7" and my highest weight was 339. I lost 100 pounds in 6 months. Most people seem to lose about 50% of their excess weight (for us heavyweights, it is common to lose 100 in 6 months).
