Does quitting dairy and wheat help in weight loss the first year after surgery?

Kitty -= send me a message - I am not able to send you one.  I also like Bluebonnet, I too hate artificial sweeteners.

I think I'd die if I didn't have dairy.  Wheat is another story - it makes me fat. pre-surgery and post forever Protein, protein, protein FIRST!  Exercise regularly and drink lots of water.  and oh, give up snacking - unless it is well planned and good for you.

All Best,

Unless you are lactose intolerant there is no reason to give up dairy.  A lot of good protein sources from dairy.  Wheat and white carbs is another story.  I have yet to hear any good things that come from them.  I won't say that going gluten free helped me with my weight loss but I will tell you it is the key to my maintenance.  Going on 2 years of not being over weight, under a 25 bmi.  I could never have done that if I was eating things with sugar and gluten.  As others have said, I know myself and moderation isn't in the cards for me with those things.  Maybe others but not me.  I have proven that to myself time and again as every weight loss I have ever had ended the day I added back sugar and or gluten products.  I blame my addiction to those things with my failure with my first WLS.  There is no WLS that doesn't allow 100% absorption of simple carbs.  If you can't control them then why bother?  It is only an exercise in frustration and futility for me to try to eat them in moderation.  It would be like an alcoholic trying to only have one drink a day.  Real alcoholics can't do it, at least not in the long run.  When I don't eat them I don't crave them.  Simple as that.  For me, nothing good can come from trying.

Ladytazz,

Amen, sister!!!!!!

i am impressed with people who can eat 'all things in moderation' like I am impressed with people who can complete Iron Man Triathalons ..... Impressive, but put of my experience.

i have had to completely step away from simple sugars and most highly processed foods to have weight loss success.

a nice by-product, though, is sanity around food.  I know what is "my" food and what is not and I don't have to worry about how many cookies I will have, the answer is zero ......

I would like to point out that every person is different. I have never been lactose intolerant but unless I'm CRAVING milk at almost fourteen years out I will dump bad from the sugar in the milk.  I can always eat yogurt and cheese just fine. Here's the thing I have kept every pound off since surgery, I eat healthy and I exercise.  I never got to my personal goal and have always remained 10 lbs away from it. Im not supper skinny so I realize that if I only was disciplined I would loose that weight. For me that would mean cutting out my dairy. Every person reacts a wee bit different and so it is important to never voice absolutes.

One quick point.... It was my experience that nothing was required at all to speed up the weight loss process in year one. It literally just fell off of me.

I am preop, with surgery in less than a month.  It took me a year to lose the 5# required to meet my pre-op goal.

That was because I was eating wheat and dairy.  I've had food sensitivities in the past, and was at my lowest weight in my life when I was free off wheat dairy sugar, etc.

I finally dropped my last 10#  when I stopped wheat, dairy, sugar, corn, eggs, and soy.   I hope there are enough food choices left after surgery.  The only carbs I am permitted post op will be potatoe.

Best of luck
