Visiting the in laws - help!

I will be visiting my in-laws soon, about 4-5 weeks out from my RNY.  This is my first time traveling, and I am so worried!  Firstly, the drive there is like 6 hours and I will have to plan fluids and eating accordingly - but I am even more worried about once we get there.  MOL is a "country cook" in the worst way - loads of butter, bacon fat, salt.  Meat is as dry as a bone, vegetables all canned with added salt and fat, and whole grains have never dared to cross her threshold.  Yes, I have let her know about my needs, but my expectations are low - after all, this is the person who showed up unexpectedly to "help" ONE WEEK after my surgery with homemade cookies, brownies and a cake.  This was even after a DIRECT request  to NOT bring any sweets.  On the one hand, she seems well-meaning and sweet, but boy it makes me wonder if I am seeing some unconscious attempts at sabotage.  And, just to make things worse, I find these visits to be horribly boring - my prior MO would be to snack on cookies and sweets, etc.  I will stock up on protein shakes, bring my walking shoes, and try to find a good book (I can only handle so much Weather Channel before insanity sets in)  Other suggestions?  Commiseration is also welcome - it would be nice to know that I am not the only one having these issues!!

Plan, plan, plan...  plan your meals ahead of time. Get there and go to the store and buy some healthy choices.  Try and stay busy but it sounds that can be a challenge.  Here is a list of 50 things to do instead of eating. Some of them do not apply as you are not home, but some may help.

Good luck and come here often during your stay and post for help if you need to

You'll have your protein shakes and that's good.  Take string cheese, cans of chicken and tuna to whip up with a little mayo, cartons of greek yogurt and put it all in a little cooler that you take with you.

Planning will help you make sure you get in all your protein while you're there but it will take other strategies to NOT eat what she's preparing.  I'm sure it'll be a food-fest....she sounds like that kind of person .  You know the kind.  They take it as a personal badge of honor if they can make someone eat off their "diet".

Will be hoping for the best for you!

Stay home this year. Let your DH go and take the kids if you have them. This is the. Time you need to be focusing on you.

Make the first stop the grocery store closest to your in-laws... in fact... in the interest of education and leading by example pick your Mother in law up and bring her along. She will know the aisles better than you and be able to help you find your foods. Pick up some cottage cheese, yogurt, cheesesticks, a little turkey lunch meat, tuna, eggs for hardboiled egg making, whatever you are eating right now so you will have a few things for sure.

and bring protein powder in baggies in a blender bottle like this: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2011/01/10-fa vorite-protein-sources.html  or some RTD's Ready to drinks to toss in the fridge.

Enjoy the trip. Maybe you will help open your inlaws eyes to a few new foods :) She may end up loving your protein shake!!

I agree to consider not going this year and stressing yourself out. it is their host responsility to learn what a healthy meal is for you and ask you to bring it if they cannot provide.and not pu**** on you.  my neighbors asked us over yesterday on the spur of the moment and despite enjoying their company i declined and eveyone esle went, the world did notend, i felt great, had what i wanted to have.

i personaly put alot energy andfocusonthis proces not to take good care of myself.

Yanno - you're not going to be able to handle much regular food yet anyway.  Bring what you need yourself and don't expect her to get anything 'special' for you.  At best, you'll be on soft foods, so eggs, cottage cheese, ricotta, yogurt, and you'll be eating SO little and feel like eating next to nothing..

When I first married 45 yrs ago, my DMIL used to cook the same way. Butter, gravies and it tasted so good. I never knew food could taste so good. I was a fat, obese, child and in my teens worked very hard to lose 60 lbs to get to 140. My all time low. Then I married and got prego and immediately gained it all back. Then it has been up up up since to an all time high of 290.

Back to the MIL. Her favorite saying was "I you don't eat it's your own fault". Then in the next breath says how fat you are getting. She is 91 now and hardly ever cooks for family. I think her generation has something to do with the way she cooked.
