New surgery date

My surgeon moved my surgery from Dec 18 to Dec 31. Now my potassium is low, 3.2, so now I'll be taking potassium, in addition to all my other umpteen meds. I understand it, but I'm not real happy about it. He just wants to make sure i'm safe. This will give me more recovery time after the parathyroid surgery this Friday.

I think my blood pressure med (HCTZ) is at the root of all of it--the high calcium, the high PTH, and the low potassium. cheeky I'm calling my PCP tomorrow to discuss it with her. And then I'm gonna call CIGNA to find out how much of this they will pay for, since starting Jan 1 they will no longer pay for WLS.

Sticky situation on the insurance. Can the surgeon move your date up a few days to give you a margin of safety for hospital bills? At least get you on a cancelation list?   For the sake of your BP, try not to stress about this!  Take good care of yourself and try to avoid crowds (well, all people, really) for the next month so you don't risk have a cold or infection toss a wrench in your plans.

Nope, he is firm. It's the Christmas season and everyone is trying to get their surgery done. They tried to get someone who was scheduled Dec 24 to switch with my Dec 18 date, but she wouldn't do it. Can't blame her, if she has kids. Mine are all grown and it wouldn't really matter to them if we had to move Christmas up a day or two. So I'm stuck with Dec.31.

Yep, HCTZ robs your body of potassium. Could your PCP change you to a different diuretic?

Unless I am remembering wrong, HCTZ is potassium sparing.

How frustrating!! Hopefully the insurance company will still pay if you can get in under the wire!
