OT- Hairy Legs need Mom Advice
Ok.. I know I know this is so way off topic but i'm trying to get a vote here.. lol..
I have a 9 year old daughter.. who unfortunately is for a lack of better words fairly hairy.. Her legs are real real hairy and she is very self concious about this.. so much so that she is refusing to wear shorts..
well.. she is also real tall and can pass for a 12/13 year old.. has size 8 feet and is over 5 ft tall..
So she had on a skirt today and of course other women look at her legs and this makes her even more self consious and I told her that maybe they thought she had nice legs.. well she isn't buying it..
I feel really bad for her.. however, I'm also not to keen in letting a 9 year old shave her legs.. on the other hand she does have a lot more hair that i ever did at the age of 9.. so what to do? do i let her roast during the summer cause she refuses to wear shorts... or do I let her shave? i'm stuck here with what is traditional and what I want to do so she isn't so self concious...
so to shave or not to shave.. that is the question?

first, she's awful big for her age. Did you ever think to get her checked out by the dr for an over active pitutary gland??? Second, if she is that self conscious for the over abundance of hair on her legs, then I would let her shave them, or better yet, nair them. If getting rid of the hair is going to make her feel better, then do it!
Yup I had her checked out.. they thought she had something call prepubesant growth because she aslo is very very developed and also got a period for 2 days when she was 7 years old.. but this runs in the family unfortunately I was barely 9 when I got my period full blown and my cousin was 7 when she got hers.. The docs wanted to medicate her but this medication can cause issues later in life with her hormones so we decided to let her grow the way she needs to..
i'd let her shave. i had the same problem when i was 10 or 11, and my mom REFUSED to let me shave. i did it anyway behind her back because i was so embarassed by it. i'd just let mher do it, and guide her on how to do it properly. i made myself a bloody mess when i did it because i didn't know what i was doing. just my 2 cents!

Hello -
I would let her shave. I can not immagine letting my legs get hairy and having to expose them - I would be sooooo embarased.
While I would not allow my daughter to shave at that age **if** there was no hair issue, given that she has this I would let her keep herself cool, and free from embarassment.
Just my opinion and I hope you can come to a solution that works for you and your daughter!

Well, it the grand scope of things letting her shave her legs is really a pretty minor thing. If its going to make her feel less self conscious is it really that big of a deal. After raising 2 teenagers (both boys, I admit) I have learned to "pick my battles" and save my absolute refusals for the really important stuff. This is, obviously, JMHO.

Hey
Let her shave, just tell her to be very careful around the boney spots. She will make mistakes at first so keep some bandaids. She will learn thru her mistakes. I feel if you let her start shaving now she will feel as if she is closer to you and can trust you with problems girls have when she needs to talk. A mom can be a girls best friend. Always keep an open mind. The last thing she wants is for mom to not understand her feelings. Good Luck, from a mom Donna
Hi,
She sounds just like m Gr'daughter...Bridget is 11..5'2,size 9 1/2 shoe, and the most beautifully shaped legs you'd ever want, but she's hairy too. My daughter didn't want her shaving this earily, but she needs too...being taller than most others her age is enough of a problem, she doesn't need to be singled out as "hairy " too..so now she shaves and since the "thrill" of it is over..it's a non issue.
Treasure you little beauty and make her life as easy as possible..little girls go thru a lot of peer pressure boys don't have.
