What does soda actually do to your pouch?
3 months ago I had my surgery and I have been doing pretty well with no complications. I have tried many foods that continuously come back up and after trying some pork potstickers I became violently ill. My stomach hurt for about 5 hours with this queasy and upset feeling like I wanted to throw up again but when I tried nothing would come up. So I told my niece to go to the store and get me a seven up because I had tried everything from tums to maalox to mylanta and nothing worked. But when I drank the soda my stomach started to feeling better. So I was just wondering if I am damaging my pouch or what. I don't want to be back in the hospital going through another abdominal surgery. Please help!!! thanks
It isn't the soda (pop) so much that is bad it is the carbonation in it. It expands in the stomch and when you have a full-sized one you don't feel it so much, but with the drastically reduced one you do and the cabonation feels as if you are going to explode. Sipping is better than "drinking" though if you must have it as you are taking smaller amounts and allowing it to slowly fill the pouch. Hope this helps. Talk to your surgeon or nutritionist though to make sure at 3 months it is ok.

According to my doctor... soda will not hurt you, but go for the SF varieties.... I do find however, that the carbonation is "too much" if I don't pour it over ice first to "burst a few bubbles" before drinking. I've found that the extra gas goes out one end or the other, so there's no real swelling in the pouch from it. Some people have noticed that it causes cravings for them, but I don't have that problem.
I'm over 18 months out, at goal, maintaining well with no problems and I drink about 1 diet coke a day. (average)
With your doctor's permission, I don't think a diet 7 up is going to hurt you at 3 months out. If it helps you feel better, then more power! Just stay away from the full-sugared versions... sugary soda really has no value other than to make us get fat
Hope you feel better soon!

Lena,
I've never heard of anyone drinking a soda and damaging their pouch so much that they had to go back for another surgery. And I was a serious MT. Dew addict pre-op and I haven't had any soda since my surgery almost 4 years ago. There is a lot of controversy over drinking or not drinking soda and I have some information on drinking carbonated beverages on my profile page from a study done by Bariatric Support Centers Success Habits. You might want to read it before you make your decision.

Hi Lena,
I am surprised that you could eat a potsticker. I was just now allowed toasted ( really browned ) toast. I hope that you don't have a stricture due to the potsticker. YOu might want to call your doctor and tell them that you ate that and make sure that it didn't hurt you. As for the soft drink....I was told that the carbonated water in any soft drink would stretch your new stomach pouch. I had surgery the 22nd of Nov. Be careful what you eat....you don't want to damage your new pouch. You probably got dumping syndrome from the poststicker....that is how it sounds to me....that is no fun at all. I hate to tell you this but ( roast does the same thing to me ) I usually stick my finger down my throat and make myself throw up to get rid of that yucky feeling. I won't do that anyother time though. I have sworn off eating roast for a long time now.....it was probably the grease from the potsticker also that made you sick. It effects me that way too. Good luck with your food choices....I never know from one time to the next if things are going to agree with me or not.

I don't fry potstickers. I boil them (swe jau or water dumplings). Easier on the tummy and the hips, too!
Don't think soda will damage the pouch, as it serves as a funnel. But you may either have it foam bak up or get a bad case of the toots!
I rarely drink soda, but the house brands are way less fizzy than the natonal brands.
Have you tried chamomile tea? If you drink protein, you can add a few chunks of frozen papaya, which is a digetive aid.
