Of greatest concern are the effects of long-term nutritional deficiencies, which are rarely discussed realistically. The neurological decline and aging seen after bariatric surgeries is especially rapid and results from multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies, said Dr. Ernsberger. Both the stomach and small intestines are critical for absorbing many nutrients, including B-vitamins, calcium, iron, vitamin D and protein. Even taking supplements in multiple times the recommended amounts doesn’t help because the surgeries eliminate the proper function of the stomach and gastrointestinal system, he said. Hence, malnutrition problems are not uncommon, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and include anemias, osteoporosis, loss of teeth, blindness and, in a reported 16% of cases, even neurological and brain damage. We are seeing the return of nutritional deficiency diseases of starvation in formerly healthy fat people that had become rare in Western societies and are typically only seen in underdeveloped regions of the world.
You copied and pasted this VERY same thing on ANOTHER thread. I'd like to see where you got this information from.

Also, this surgery is a TOOL to HELP people to lose weight and gain a HEALTHY life. People HAVE to also eat healthy foods and exercise. This just gives them a jump start.

Again, I'd like to see your sources. I can't imagine my DOCTOR, with a 30+ year practice. Advising his patients to have surgeries done that cause them to 'starve' after being obese.

I have a LONG LONG term WLS person that debunks ALL of the things you have listed. My Aunt had her stomach stapled back in the early 80's and is STILL slim! She eats HEALTHY and exercises, she takes care of herself and doesn't have ANY of the things you have listed.

With all surgeries there are risks. There are risks being obese as well! I don't see you listing THOSE stats.

I am not sure which post you are referring.  But feel free to PM me if you have questions about the DS or to post your questions about the DS on the DS forum/

I will add that I have no gas and no bowel issues and I am three years out. I eat pretty much whatever I want in moderation.

I lost my band after two slips.  It has been very difficult for me.  The band is a good tool and many people do really well with it but both my doctor and I were not very patient.  I believe that we rushed the fills and that is what could have caused the slips.  I know that most insurance companies won't pay for the sleeve, but I think it's a good option...no implants, no adjustments, no malabsorption, no cutting of the intestines.  If you can swing the $15K, you should seriously consider that procedure.  Dr. Alverez has a complete package in Mexico for less than $10K.  I know going to Mexico is a big deal, but the VSG forum is full of his patients that do very well.  Good luck with your decision!

I want to know VERY badly too... I thoght about posting this to the DS board...   The surgeon makes the side effect sound realllly horrendous and I need to know how people feel about living like that?  Can you eat to avoid the "gas" that's mentioned?  It sounds like something that would keep me single forever and where's the fun in that? LOL

you have to know that you arent alone. I am sure tons of us feel the same way.

I want the surgery very badly but as excited as I will be I will also be terrified... I used to be anti- WLS because the odds were much worse 1/100  and now they are something liek 1/1000  which is better but its scarey :(   I need to be a strong single mommy too...   I think your chances of dying from your comorbidities are higher than from the surgery but having known someone personally who died from it as you do... that would make it all the more scarey!

Thanks for the replies! :)

I am interested to hear about both RNY and lap band...wow your quite a few years post op from getting your lapband.  Any complications?  Any tips?  I have "heard" that the band only does 30% of the 'work'....the other 70% is up to me on the diet/excercise/behavior changes/etc...do you agree?

Karkies - is there a specific procedure you want to know about? I'm 5-1/2 years out from Lapband surgery.

Topic: Surgury V/S Fear V/S Dying of my fat body
I am new here, I just found this site, and I am so glad.  I need so much help it isn't even funny.  I have been looking into surgury after 2 doctors talked to me about needing to loose weight and thinking I might be a candidate.  I am want to loose the weight where I can work on my infertility and try and get pregnant.  The doctor who found my infertility said to get the meds I need, I would have to loose around 100 pounds.  He suggested looking into WLS.  Then I went to another doctor for my severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome, GERD, and acid reflux.  I was talking to him about how the doctor had suggested it, but I didn't think I could with those digestive problems.  He said he saw no problem in it, and thought surgury and weight loss would help me with those as well.  On top of those problems I have diabetes (Type2) and I have a 4 times underactive thyroid.

My question is I go see my home doc. soon, and had planned on talking to him about this and getting a referral.  I truthfully am scared to death though.  I was leaning to the Lap Band (as was my hubby) because the others have such severe complications and risks.  I had a friend die from complications of her gastric bypass, and she was about my age in better health also.  I really want to loose the weight, and I have tried so many things but I can't seem to do it.  My question is what would you all having gone through some of these procedures suggest.. and or why.
Is it worth the risk?  I fear dying... because I want to loose the weight to be a mom (I am not ready to give that dream up)  I also fear how I would afford this, and how or if I would need plastic surgury which I know would be expensive.  Also I am concerned about the pain, and the sickness that seems to be so relivant with a lot of you all.  See with my IBS My digestive track slows down and backs up some causing me to swell now... and I have acid reflux causing me to be sick some.. Already having these problems I wonder what would be good for me of it would make it just to unbearable...?

PLEASE HELP!!
