at this point I only take methotrexate and was told I could take this and any ibuprofen if needed after the surgery, on my stomach by my surgeon and that is the reason I am doing the VSG instead of RYN as recommended by her.
Topic: RE: RA and bypass
Hi Samantha
I have Psoraitc Arthritis and Osteo A. and at the beginngs for RA .. I saw a WSL surgeon and was told RYN would work best for my size but he didnt know much about arthritis or the meds that I need to take after. note one of the meds can not be crushed , so that leaves me with injections ..... In reading and doiing some more research on arthristis and WLS I was confused as to what would work best for me and if that was the best option. so I went to see another surgeon that knew more about arthritis and WLS I was told to really consider the sleeve due to being able to take meds that I will have to take after the surgery for the arthrtis, I would not be able to take those meds/ pills into my pouch after RYN they would be too rough . also note that loosing weight will help with some joint pain because we no longer have all that weight on our joints but will not make arthristis go away so being able to take my regular meds or even ibuprofen was important to me , so i will do a sleeve instead of RYN as recommended by the second surgeon.
I would check if you will be able to take steriods on the RYN pouch? good luck hope this helps alittle
my surgery is scheduled 9-6-12 ....

JD,
I am assuming you have the band? I have lost more in 4 months than I lost in the first year with the band, I am loosing slow but I think it is because I am not eating till about 1 p.m....just talked to the NUT today.
My surgeon sells surgery , I have been seeing the phisatrist in the office and they "did not renew his contract" could it be that he helped so many people that they didn't need surgery??? Hip surgery runs about the same risk as RNY .03 same as a hysterectomy.
I really think I might TRY loosing another 40 and see where I am at , My NUt says she is posative tat I can loose 20 in a month , even thou I went 2 months and only lost 3...so I WILL do what she says.
I just have days when I just don't know how long I can go on like this I am taking about 6 Norco in 24 hours, have new script for pain patch, I am not sure how that will effect weight though.
Celibrex will be out if you convert to RNY as it is an NSAID .
I LOVE the RNY no pain when I eat...wonderful
P.M. me anytime , believe me I know how discouraging it is to gain the weight back , I am afraid of doing it even with RNY !!

I can only speak about knees. Mine had been shot for over 10 years. They were both bone on bone. Losing pounds helped but not nearly enough. I had my first one replaced in January and was going to have the other done this coming January but I am seriously thinking about a revision as I have gained back a significant about of weight.
Currently I am taking Celebrex, Cuymbalta (more as an anti-depressent but I understand it is also a pain reliever) and 30 mg of Oxi per day. Some days I have to add an Aleve. However there are some days that I can get by on nothing but then I don't do very much.
What does your ortho surgeon say? Which would s/he wish to replace first? Which gives you the most pain? While I was in rehab there was mixed group of hips and knees one woman had her hips done and then a week later went in for her knees. She was in mid fifties and she must have been healthy to be able to handle that. I guess what I am trying to say is that unless the surgeon has a preference it may not matter. To put your mind at ease, all of rehab did very well (an all over 45 crowd) and there didn't seem to be any strong complaints about pain.
Good luck to you. If you don't mind I might PM you later to find out aobut your revision from Band to RNY

Topic: RE: Anyone develop arthritis POST surgery as a complication?
Hi... I also has RNY in 2006 and now have arthritis that is very painful. I tried taking ALEVE which helped but now that is bothering my pouch so I had to stop and the pain in my hand and ankle is terrible. I was looking online today to see what I could do and I found this site and your post.... What a shock to find that possibly RNY can cause arthritis??

Topic: RE: The dreaded GOUT
I am wondering if I am having my first gout flare up. I will see my doctor this week, but my guess is that drinking enough water will really help remove excess urea from the system, preventing gout in the first place... But I am pretty sure it is too late for that now. I am off to do research and see what I can do! Ugh! It hurts!!
Topic: RE: who's had a total knee replacement??
I know this is an old topic and I hope everything went well . My grandfather ended up having two total knee replacements, one in each knee and though it was painful and it was a long recovery, he tells everyone he would go through it again if he had to because the ending result is he is free of pain and is able to get up and do things once again even with his old age.
The only concern we had was the bill when it came in, it was actually quite a shock. I found a calculator that might help you determine the bill, basically make sure it was fair. I know I compared it to my grandfather's bills and it was almost a perfect match. It takes into consideration your age, insurance, pre-exisiting conditions and even more important, your location and then produces an estimated bill for a knee replacement surgery. It even includes physical therapy in the bill. I found it was really great. I hope it helps you as it did for me!

Topic: RE: Hip replacement and WLS- which first
I opted for WLS first because my doc said they would be reluctant to do surgery on me ( bothe knees and r hip) because of my weight and frankly I was hoping if I could loose at least 80 lbs I MIGHT not need knee replacement.
My knees feel better already , but still hurt , my hip is better after the last injection. I do NO exercise , only stretching.
If you opt for WLS first , your other issues may help you get it !!
Good luck
