I am scheduled for RNY surgery September 9, and know that I will have to stop taking Meloxicam, an NSAID I was prescribed couple of years ago for osteoarthritis pain. When I had to stop it for a week prior to endoscopy, I could barely walk by the time th endoscopy happened. Now, I am realizing that I will not ever be able to take it again! The nurse at my pre-op seminar suggested purple pectin (tablespoon of liquid pectin in Grape juice) and turmeric. I am weaning myself off the Meloxicam now, only taking a pill every other day and planning to go to one every three days next week. But my knees and hip are really starting to ache now. Afraid of what will happen when I can't take anything! Any advice out there?

Here is my story. A year ago The Hip surgeon I had, changed his mind one week before the surgery and said he would not do it. My workplace put me off on disability because of my need for the hip replacement. My job is quite active working with parents and their children. Before I left my manager said they had no problem at all with me adapting parts of how I do my job to accommodate my arthritis and replaced.
In the conversation when they put me on disability my manager and the director of my workplace said many nice things i.e. what a great worker I was , that they wanted me to get healthy and they wanted me back that I was perfectly suited for my job. That they would hold my job for 5 years. Now I think their assumption was that I could be on works private disability for 5 years but in actuality I can only be on it for two years. I recorded it as I was very paranoid at the time, they don't know.
Once the hip surgeons ( multiple surgeons) heard I also wanted to have WLS they refused to do the hip before the WL. WLS will be September 2, 2016 . Hip will be March 6, 2017. Back to work September 2017. Disability is over in October 2017.
In conversation, and this is the second one I've had like this ( she calls them check ins)My manager made it sound like I'll never make it back. Tonight she actually made it sound like she expected me to have given up by now and that she was surprised I hadn't.
I really believe she is working very hard while I'm gone and cannot speak for myself to paint a story of physical incompetence. I have arthritis ( moderate to severe in the knees and feet) as well but the hip is why I am off. So she brought up the arthritis as if that was the reason I was not at work. I did correct this politely.
I have met with other staff socially and have been slightly confused by their comments and questions "oh you are coming back" or " are you coming back" and more and when I say I am working very hard and hope to be back next year they look at each other like they know something I don't.
Tonight my manager talked about a friend who when he was off on disability the insurance company retrained him, and how she thought that they would do that with me. I suggested that the insurance package his company paid for was maybe slightly different and that you had to pay for extras like that. our insurance company does not do that.
I truly don't know what life will be like once I lose weight and have my hip replaced.
Has anyone been through this. Can they renege on what they have said, even when I have it recorded. Do they not have to give me time to get back on my feet. This manager has done this before with others, repeated, we all worry about her, she is the reason I recorded the conversation, she has also bullied people to the point where they leave to get away from her so it very feasible however is it legal.
Anyone know. Anyone been there.
I am curious if anyone ever had an update to this. I'm going through something similar and would like any advice. I'm only 29 and had the surgery done to decrease the pain in my hip and lower back but it's getting worse every day.

- Ginger essential oil: Ginger is a flowering plant, and it is the root (rhizome) that is used. It is an amazing healing plant because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties making it a go-to remedy for many gastrointestinal issues, including gas and bloating. The anti-inflammatory properties are what help ease the swelling and joint pain associated with arthritis.
- 2. Peppermint essential oil: Peppermint really is a magical herb that eases so many issues, from headaches to tummy troubles. The menthol found in the leaves has anti-inflammatory properties and will ease pain and reduce inflammation. But mix it with a carrier oil (jojoba or almond are gentle and most commonly used) before applying topically, because peppermint is very strong and can irritate the skin.
- 3. Orange essential oil: Orange also has anti-inflammatory properties which makes it an excellent choice for reducing pain and swelling associated with arthritis. Orange is a mood energizer, and it smells great, to boot. Diffuse this one for the added boost in mood, and add a few drops to a carrier oil and rub it into sore joints.
- 4. Rosemary essential oil: Rosemary is ranked as one of the best oils to use for arthritis because of its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It will help promote circulation.
- 5. Marjoram essential oil: Marjoram is wonderful for bringing relief to stiff joints because it has calming properties. Make sure to not apply it to any broken or damaged skin, because it can be an irritant.
Hi everyone, this is Roberto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and I would like to connect with those on a similar path as me to Health, Vitality and Happiness.
I'm a single, 37 year old, non-smoking or drinking male who has been on quite a roller coaster ride of loss and gain. This time I want to keep it off and be in the best shape of my life for the rest of my life. I have some mild osteo-arthritis in my knee and hip which is weight related and losing the weight would take all the pressure of my joints.
It would be greatly beneficial to connect with others on a similar journey and who live in the Toronto, Canada area. Working out together, motivating each other and sharing ideas and success are all a perfect plan. Also those with plenty of experience in the fitness industry and can offer their help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and look forward to hearing from all of you.

Hello guys, please suggest me some good exercises for my mother to prevent offset of Arthritis. She is 50+ and she seldom gets pain in her wrists. I'm afraid if she is getting Arthritis. I have read an article about Arthritis which helped me a lot in understanding this joint disorder. Here it is - Arthritis. Please share your views too.
Life can be so hard when you have arthritis can't it and know one really knows except those who experience it. I'm willing to try and do without Nsaid for as long as I can but as you know this is progressive and I want options down the road. I'm willing to earn my pain but I know how bad it can be specially as you age. I want options. My mom currently does injection in her back and hip and they certainly help. I hope they work for you too.
Good luck on your new journey! I have copies of all my reports regarding my arthritis I'm hoping that will help me get what I feel I need.
Thanks and I would love to here how your adventure unfolds.
See your dr. I have mild osteo arthritis. As well I'm still diabetic. I also have a I.T band problem in my leg. So I'm now seeing a physical therapist. I know I'm not out as far as you. But it will help. Hope you get better.
I had a VSG because of osteoarthritis. My surgeon is allowing me to take Nsaids with it as long as I take a medication such as Prilosec to protect my stomach at the same time.
Now Prilosec and that type of medication is coming under scrutiny for kidney issues.
I am currently taking numbetone (sp?), tramadol (I believe a narcotic) as well as Prilosec just once a day to cut back on the Nsaids and the acid reducer. I am allowed to take it all the time. Not sure yet if that is going to work out or not as surgery was just 8 months ago.
As others will mention that VSG was wonderful BUT it doesn't really help the osteoarthritis issue much at all. Yes, I can get around better, my hands still hurt (especially my thumb joints). I am considering, if I can find a rheumatologist willing, to get cortisone shots in my hands. I think I could go without my Nsaids for a short term to give my new stomach a rest from the Nsaids and just use the cortisone shots as well as the tramadol.
Good luck with your decision-making process. From your information it sounds like your osteo is much worse than mine and that could be a major factor in your mind.
