Topic: RE: Anti-inflammatories After WLS
Michelle,

Just wondering what you have found out about your knees.  I am 39 years old and have bone on bone on my left knee and not far behind on the left.  I am also taking Vicodin for the pain.  I have been to several Orthopedic surgeons, and they all tell me the same thing, you are to young for a replacement.  I finally found one that will do it, but he wants me to wait as long as I can.  Well, I do not want to gain any more weight after losing 130 pounds, and I don't like that I can't play with my kids.  I can't go down the stairs to do the laundry.  I can't go sledding with the kids.  This just sucks.  So now what do I do, have the surgery to have a better life now, or live on the pain meds and be a zombie and not play with the kids while they are young.

Thanks

Tammy

Thank you for trying to help others.  I try to tell everyone that I know about the DS.  I recently tried to convince a woman that I have become friends with to not have her RNY that she had scheduled 2 weeks ago.  She has arthritis and other things wrong with her, but she did not listen to me and had RNY anyway.  Who knows I may have to revise one day.  I am only 32.  I am thankful that there are people on here spending their own time trying to warn unsuspecting people.  Kaiser knew I had degenerative joint disease. They didn't call it arthritis or tell me it was actually arthritis until it was too late, but I did not even know about the DS.

Topic: Knee Replacements at age 40??

Hi everyone,

I had RNY in 2006 in Mexico.  I have lost 130 pounds and have had 20 of those creep back on within the past year.  I was in YMCA Boot Camp last year and my left knee swelled up and I could not walk on it.  I was told I have arthritus in both my knees and have bone on bone in my left.  I have tried everything from braces, physical therapy, shots of all kinds, celebrex. shoe inserts, and lots more.  I have now found a doctor that will do a total replacement on my left knee, but would like me to wait a little longer because I am only 39 years old.  How am I suppose to loose the weight to make myself feel better, when it hurts to walk.  I am in tears after shopping at Walmart.  I can't go on like this anymore.  Has anyone had experience with a Total Knee replacement at age of 40??  I would love to hear your thoughts on this.  Thanks so much for all your help.

I am SO sorry! This is the reason that I do spend a lot of time talking about this---I know how I'd have felt if I'd gone through with the RNY I had scheduled, only to later find out I couldn't have NSAIDs and that there WAS a different surgery I could have had that would have been better for my problems.

I hope the OP sees your post!

I wish that I had run into someone that could have warned me before my surgery.  All I keep saying is if I would have known.  I have been diagnosed with multiple things wrong w/ me including arthritis and I can not take any Nsaids.  I was told that I have a double whammy, so I have to take other meds that would have worked in conjunction w/ the Nsaids, but now I can't and it isn't fun.  I wish I would have known.

Topic: RE: Methotrexate and Weight Gain????
Uggh...  I am in the same boat...  I have bechets disease which is sort of like lupus.  I had my gastric bypass october of 2008 and I have lost 100lbs.  I have had horrible flare ups of sores, arthritis and I was on all of those medications you mentioned... the humaira,  and even infusions monthly..   The Rheumy wants me to go back on the methotrexate and humaria and prednisone.  and I am refusing.   I did not go through all of this to gain that weight back I would rather be crippled GRRRR..   Im sorry your going through this too..

That's true---but there are also a lot of meds you'll have to give up with a pouch. (With the DS, you'd still have a fully-functional stomach.) But choose whatever you think is best for YOU---just be sure you know all your options.

Thanks for the info, but both my rhuematologist and my surgeon have given me the green light for the RNY even though I was diagonosed with RA, its mild at this point.  But there are so manyu other meds I can take that won't affect my pouch.
Thanks again,
Tori

I know you say that your insurance doesn't cover the Sleeve or the DS, but given your health issues, I think you can FORCE them to cover them. If you want help to appeal, come over to the DS board---we have a lot of insurance gurus over there who just LOVE whuppin' up on some insurance-company butt!

Kathy,
Thanks for the info, I will be sure to talk to my surgeon about it.  The rhuematologist said that I have mild RA, and has prescribed me plaquinel.  But my surgeon said that he doesn't want me to take it until one month after surgery due to it causing stomach upset.
