Topic: Low Blood Sugar while 3 weeks Post-Op Liquids after VSG
I am type 2 diabetic. I haven't taken any glucophage since before surgery. (4/25/)11

I'm currently on a 3 week liquid diet and my sugar keeps dropping into the 60's and below

Has this happened to anyone else? Did it eventually normalize? How long did it take?

My Dr. told me to drink apple juice when it drops but geeze i'm not used to this. It feels like i've gone from one extreme to the next

Getting of meds was why I had the surgery also.  It will help your liver, and your blood pressure also.  My BP is 90/60 and my liver enzymes are all normal now.  It's a wonderful feeling, you'll love the new feelings.

I.m glad you're happy with your surgery.  They all have their plus points, and a negative side.  I'm glad I don't malabsorb and don't take supplements although waiting to come off insulin was frustrating!

Great news!  I'm now coming up to 6 months off insulin.  My weight loss has stalled for the last 2 months at 85 pounds, but it will start coming off again, as I'm still losing inches.  The sun is shining and we're going to walk through a bluebell wood to a medieval castle this morning.

Hi Paul5678,
I had the biliopancreatic duodenal switch surgery and I had my surgery Dec. 6, 2010 and I am still not taking any diabetic medicine.  Before surgery I took 100 units in the morning and 45 units at night.  And now my readings have been like between 71-113.   Which is awesome they tell me.   I've lost almost 130 some pounds.   And yes Life is good

Thanks, cytomama and congrats!  I'm on metformin, glimeperide, actos, victoza and lantus, and consider it a good day when I can keep sugars under 150 pp.  I eat high protein, low carb, and the protein racks up the calories. Looking for some big changes after surgery.

I was the support person when my wife when through RnY almost 7 years ago.,  The first few months were the most difficult with trying to learn what her body could tolerate and could not.

Good luck to you!

Thanks, Sue.  I just got my date (5/23) and I'm very excited.  My diabetes meds change about every three months, and I'm looking forward to something that has a better track record.  The weight loss is going to be a side benefit (80 lbs or so), but getting off wome of the 14 pills plus injections daily is going to be great.

I'm just a week out. Prior to surgery I was on metformin, glimeperide, and Lantus. When I left the hospital, the docs told me not to take any more metformin or glimeperide. I'm on a half dose of my Lantus and a sliding scale of humulin. So far my blood sugars have improved. I only have to take the humulin once a day. I'm hoping with weight loss I'll be able to get off the shots. Good luck on your surgery.

Good A1c, good luck with your stage of the triathalon.  I'm stuck with 15 pounds to target, stalled for 2 months but just like you, I'll keep at it.  Isn't this new life great!

Topic: 6 month update (x-post)

(I wanted to cross post my update here since so many of you have ended up my "closest OH friends!").

I'm at home for the next two days, trying to finish up my final paper for a hellish class that I'm taking.  I decided that writing my 6 month update would be yet one more way to procrastinate!

I've been doing great.  Feeling better than I have in I don't know when.  My weight loss has definitely slowed.  I'm averaging about a 6 lb loss a month or so. If I could somehow manage 7.5 a month for the next 6 months, then I would hit my personal goal of 150.  Right now I'm in a size 16 (some 14's, some 18's depends on the brand) and 195 lbs. I am experiencing some of the dreaded hair loss, but I just cut my hair and decided to try not to think about it.  I'm going to the Y at least twice a week and walking on off days.  My husband and I have taken up hiking and I'm loving it!  I'm doing the swimming leg of a relay triathlon in July!  Lots going on and feeling absolutely great!  My Type I Diabetes is much better.  My last A1c was a 6.4.  I will take it! I am going to post a couple of pics.  I appreciate you taking the time to read my update!  I am so greatful that my life has changed so drastically for the better.  I know this site has been a constant companion and many of you have made my journey that much better.  I'm ready to get this next 6 months going!
