Came off insulin 3 months ago after a vsg 10 months before that and 85 pounds lost. Down from 18 tablets a day to 3, sleep apnoea gone, 20 inches gone from my waist. Hope to lose another 15 pounds! Life is good...

Just bumping because I see multiple questions on the first page of this forum that are answered in this thread, so hopefully this information will be helpful.

Topic: RE: a1c guidelines for teens?
The most widespread resources say anything below 6.0 is normal. However, if you dig deeper, you'll find that an A1C above 5.5 is really cause for caution/monitoring. I don't believe age makes a difference. Sounds like your doc may be on the conservative side (which, IMO, is a GREAT thing!).
Topic: Has anyone been able to talk their insurance company out of...
...the 6 (12 or insert your number here) month diet requirement for their RNY or DS surg on the basis of getting your diabetes in remission? What I mean is, I want to see if I can appeal that requirement on the basis of getting my DS primarily to get "rid" of my diabetes and all the complications that go along with that diagnosis. The weight loss is a bonus (for me), but I really want wls to get my diabetes in remission. I want to tell them, "in 6 months, I may or may not lose some weight (nowhere near the 100 lbs), but I will still be a diabetic." See my rationale? Do you think it will fly with the ins. co...or do you know of anyone who has tried/gone that route?
Thanks for any thoughts,
Beth

Topic: post-op med changes
I've been approved for RnY, and about to set a date. How soon post-op did your diabetes meds change? Is it a gradual weaning process or were you off meds right away?
Topic: RE: last clearance this week and still cant decide!!!
I had the vsg just over a year ago, I was on insulin and 18 tablets... Took ten months and 80-ish pounds lost before I came off insulin, but now on 3 tablets and off insulin for nearly 3 months. I'll never be 'cured' of the diabetes, but as long as I stay away from refined carbohydrates I should stay off insulin, hoping to get offeven more tablets as I continue to lose weight. My dream would be to be a diet-controlled diabetic. Life is very good!

I have suffered from same symptoms as you and after more then a year trying to convince my doctor that SOMETHING was wrong and insisting on Endo consult I have severe reactive hypoglycemia..YUCK..Being a nurse I had to google everything out there that pertained to this subject and came across a study being down in Ohio for the past 5/6 years on sideffects ie:dumping syndrome or otherwise called reactive hypoglycemia. I called this office and spoke with the Best most caring nurse, whom also had gastric bypass about this sideffect and she then refeared me to the endo in charge of the study whom was a wealth of knowledge of this condition!! Above is her info she may be able to direct to you local Endo whom have experience with this .. She also encouraged me to share her info (Like I said wonderful Nurse) to anyone whom it would help !!
