Stress can increase our blood sugars.  But maybe you're doing what I did at first.  Eat alot of the forbidden foods because I wasn't going to be able to after surgery.  What ever is causing it, the insulin will probably help.  I've been on the pre-op liquid diet for the past 8 days and I've been able to rid myself of three of my four diabetes medications, including insulin, so I hope that works for you.

I am scheduled for RNY on December 6th and for the last three weeks my blood sugars have taken on their own "life" so to speak.  They have jump from the normal range to 500+ on and off; I have consulted my family doctor and he is considering changing me to insulin until my surgery.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on, any input would be greatly appreciated.

Topic: Hospital Stay
I am 6 days RNY post op.  I had an uneventful experience in the hospital as far as my surgery went...all except for...NOBODY WOULD GIVE ME INSULIN!!!

Being a Type 1, I had informed the hospital rep that attended my pre-op.  She mentioned to me that she would not it and get the "Diabetes Team" involved.  Thank God I did that.

When I left for the hospital Tuesday morning, my BS was 98.  By the time they checked it when inserting IV etc, it had raised to 150 (stress).  After surgery, I was 240.  They gave me 1 unit of Humalog.  I let them know that would never be enough but they advised that was what my Dr had ordered (per his scale).  At midnight, they checked again and it was 340.  This time they gave me 2 units of Humalog.  I had what I believe was my first Panic Attack.  They said they weren't going to give me Lantus.  I wanted so bad to go to my purse and get my own insulin  but I didn't want it to come down and them think their 2 units had done it.  Luckily, 10 minutes later they said they had received a call advising them to give me my Lantus.  The next morning, I met someone from the Diabetes Team who had called in to check on me the previous night.  She listened to me and what I took pre-op and altered my orders.  She even was an advocate for me to go home that day (no matter what my sugars looked like) because she knew I would monitor them better than the hospital was.  They were checking my levels every 6 hrs and giving me amounts that didn't touch my levels.  I was so disappointed in the way things were handled but felt my saving grace was that "Diabetes Team" that came to my rescue.

My advice to any Type 1's having surgery is to have a plan BEFORE you enter the hospital.  Do not let your surgeon dictate your insulin dosages.  The nurses acted like I was crazy and kept telling me how "normal" it all was.  I know that it is but it was making me feel ill and I couldn't understand their take on things. I think they thought I was straight up crazy and were glad to see me leave, lol.

Hey Missy...  I share the same concerns you do as far as the amt of weight loss we can accomplish with being on insulin..  I had my surgery on 10-18 and before surgery I was taking 100 units of Lantus a day, and approximately 135 units of Novolog a day...  I now only take 70 units of Lantus a day and 0 units of Novolog!!  I have lost 20 lbs since surgery.  So far so good...  I am nervous about eating "real" food again due to the extreme type 1 insulin resistant diabetic I am...  I REALLY don't want to have to take all of those shots again!!  Just taking things one day at a time!!

Topic: RE: Type 1 for 30 years -- RNY or sleeve?
Hi There!

I am over 30 years Type I Diabetic and currently seeking what WLS to have as well.  I am currently on an insulin pump with a continuous glucose sensor.  I have a three year old son and too feel that I don't want to be the "fat" mom.  I have meet with my surgeon this week and he is recommending the Sleeve.  I was dead set on the Band, however after doing research, talking with my surgeon and other individuals that have had the procedure, I think the Sleeve would be the best choice.

I am looking for any advice from Type I diabetics that are on a pump and has had the Sleeve procedure.  I would like to know their experience and  how they handled the first few weeks post op!  I look forward hearing from you!  Thanks.

I had band surgery last year....lost about 25 pounds, as soon as I started eating normaly, lean meats, a few carbs mixed in with dinner, fruit, salad. I gained it all back. I am type 1 and have been seeing a nutritionist for years, so she knew I wasn't over eating...just eating what was on the diet from her.  We decided to test everything. I ate nothing but protein shakes and yogurt and oatmeal for 2 weeks, lost 10 pounds, Ate normal the next two weeks, gained it back. I am getting ready for RNY now.

The band just didn't work for me. I didn't eat a whole lot to begin with, so I was hopeful, but unsure. It seems that after 32 years as a type 1, I need the malabsorption part of the band in order to lose. Good luck. I hope it works for you.

Type 1 since 1993, and I had the VSG. The caveats about RNY being better for diabetics mostly are about Type 2. I found the restriction of VSG was sufficient to bring me down to 128 lbs. and a size 4. I really like that all of my "connections" are the original ones, and I don't have to worry about supplementation as much. Never had a leak, and feel great now!

Good luckj with your decision and your weight loss journey. If I can help, please let me know!
