Darlene - best of luck to you. I had RNY 2 years ago and have Type 1.5 (LADA) diabetes. Follow directions and you should do well!
Hi Darlene, I have diabetes and had the sleeve done in Feb. My A1C was 9.8 before surgery and it is now 7.5 I still take my insulin 2x's a day and byetta 2 x's a day but I am on about 60% less insulin then before surgery. I have lost weight very slowly and I think it is from the insulin so I will be talking to my dr about taking me off of it and putting me on pills. I am hoping the further along I get the better my A!C will become. I can tell you that since surgery I feel much better not as tired as I was before. I wish you all the best-Julie
I am 66 years old and have type 2 Diabetes and will be scheduled for surgery soon (vertical sleeve) I have done a lot of research on the different surgeries and I think the sleeve is best for me but I can not find that much information on Diabetes after surgery I would love to connect with people that are Diabetics and have had Vertical sleeve surgery . A friend told me about the site and I am looking forward to visiting and sharing with others what I have learned and hope to learn from them . Thank Darlene Odell
Thanks for the info. That is what I wanted to know. I did put an e-mail in to my surgeon's nurse just to ask about my levels. I appreciate you writing me back.
5.3 is fine....and very good. Ask your surgeon what they require in a1c....it seems that many are saying 10.0 is the upper threshold, which is high (but not surprising for out of control diabetes).... I am post RNY and usually run in the low 7's. I am on a pump and am very careful about diet, etc.
Best of luck!
I unfortunately didn't really pay attention to this Forum til now but after starting to read some posts last night, it's making me wonder about if my surgery might be postponed? I had blood tests on Wed. morning and met with my surgeon a couple of hours later. He said I was a good candidate and the surgery is set for not this Mon. but next. He asked if I was diabetic and as far as I know I am not so I told him as such. I would assume even if he hadn't had the results back by the time we met on Wed. that his office would have called by Friday evening if something weird with my labwork would have come back to make him want to postpone the surgery? I am not diagnosed with Diabetes but I'm sure that I'm probably prediabetic. The last time I had a test showed me at 5.3% which was at least a couple of years ago. What numbers typically make a surgeon say, 'whoa'? I even had to pay all my costs up front 10 days before the surgery date. So, I'm even already all paid up too. Any thoughts by anyone?
Hi. I'm a type 1 for about 26 years and pump user for over 10. My bs is fairly well controlled and no complications thus far. I'm seriously considering having sleeve gastrectomy surgery. I have about 125 lbs to lose that I've gained over many years since my diagnosis. Always thought I could lose the weight but with type 1 it's so complicated and sometimes near impossible. I suffer from the same issues with exercise that have been posted here: having a low bs right in the middle and having to eat sugar. Definitely defeats the whole purpose of exercise. It's such a relief to find your posts...knowing that type 1s can be successful after weight loss surgery.
I use a Minimed Revel pump with CGMS. I love not having to do multiple injections and pump therapy more closely mimics what a normal pancreas does so it's really the best treatment option. But I found pretty soon after starting on the pump that it allowed me too much flexibility in my eating patterns. It's the best treatment for my type 1 but one of the worst things for my eating habits. With type 1 I always have to know when my next meal is, if I have sugar to treat a low, etc This doesn't work very well for someone who loves carbs the way I do. In any case, thank you for the posts. Feels good not to be alone!

I am currently 18 days our from sleeve surgery...
pre surgery I was on Insulin-NPH 10 units at night and 5 units in the am; glipizide 5mg 2x a day; Metformin 1000 mg 2x day and my sugars were in the 250's to 300's on a regular basis...
NOw that I am sleeved my meds are ONLY METFORMIN and my sugars run 100-120 on a daily basis. I am tolerating food very well...I am on the pureed stage 3 right now...I am eating tuna salad, string cheese, chicken pureed, beans and cheese, greek yogurt, steam vegetables until mushy. I eat about 1/2 cup of food and I am satisfied....
My weight is slowly coming off....not as fast as other people though..but hey my medications have decreased greatly and I feel like a million bucks....I DO NOT feel that diabetes "hangover" any longer...
I started out at 276 and now I am at 250 lbs...
So what are you eat for breakfast , lunch and dinner?
my surgeon would only do my surgery when it got under 8, i stayed off of carbs and I did it,i had my RNY 6 years ago, my BS have improved but i am still diabetic n take metformin n Januvia.
I had my surgery 6 years ago lost close to 100 lbs. and i still have to watch all my carbs
good luck to you
Susan
