Thank you for your reply. I did let them know but haven't heard anything back. My guess is they are waiting for the results of this morning's bloodwork.

Even more alarming was the call I got from the office telling me the nasal swab they did this morning came back positive for MRSA. (!?) So now I've got a tube of goop to apply up my nose twice a day for the next 5 days. Lovely. But at least they didn't say they were postponing because of this.

I am praying they don't postpone because realistically, I can't afford another week off wor****il the end of June. The thought of stopping the liquid diet and then doing it all over again...ugh.

Of course, if it happens, it happens. Nothing I can do about it even though I'll kick and scream and cry (privately, anyway). My health IS the most important thing.

Hopefully I'll get some good news tomorrow.

Thanks again!

I know the idea of postponing surgery is horrible, but I think it is important to tell your surgeon and get all the bloodwork information you can. You and your surgeon may decide that a different wls would be more appropriate for you in the long term. In the big picture this is just a blip, but your health is the most important thing. Best wishes!

My heart is in my throat. I apologize if something like this has been posted before. A quick search on the forums turned up a few posts but nothing looked quite like my situation.

I am scheduled for a VSG this coming Monday and have been on a pre-op diet for 9 days now. My diet is protein shakes, clear liquids, and V8/tomato juice.

Last Friday (day 5 of diet) I had an annual checkup with my PCP and got some bloodwork done. I had no idea they had a lab on site so hadn’t been fasting—I had some coffee (with literally a splash of fat-free ½ & ½ (finished the carton, been drinking black coffee since)), V8, and part of my first morning shake but the nurse said to do the bloodwork anyway.

Well, the office called today and told me my fasting glucose was 141 and they want to do a 2-hour gtt.

I told them I can’t do it before the surgery because it’ll mess up my pre-op diet (I have worked DAMN hard on this diet and refuse to screw it up). But then after surgery, I still won’t be able to do it because I won’t have the capacity for that nauseating drink. The nurse is going to talk to the doctor and see what he wants to do.

I also went in for pre-admission testing at the hospital this morning. THEY drew blood too but I’m not sure if there was a fasting glucose test in there or not. There were certainly enough vials for it. If my fasting glucose comes back elevated from this morning’s testing, is that something the surgeon would cancel the surgery for?

I’ve had elevated blood sugar before, but it was at a “keep an eye on it" level. I also had gestational diabetes (diet-controlled) to add to the mess. And my dad died from complications of poorly managed Type 2. So it’s in the family and I’ve got a history.

I am panicking right now that they might cancel my surgery. After all this work on the diet, making plans to be out of work for a week…I mean, isn’t the surgery supposed to HELP patients with diabetes? What would they do? Postpone it while putting me on meds or something until an A1C comes back within a reasonable range? The office did say they may have me do an A1C before surgery…

Should I call my surgeon’s office and tell them? Should I wait and see what happens with my test this morning? Should I just crawl into a hole and cry? I’m crying anyway…

Thank you.

Topic: RE: Type 2 Post op ?
I had RNY at the end of December 2011 and took several oral and Insulin medications, including 1000mg Metformin twice a day. I am down to half a dose of Metformin and my numbers are in the low 100's consistently.

Going to see my endocrinologist this week and excited to see my A1C.

Since the Metformin tablet is so big you can cut it in half and take 1/2 in the morning and the other in the evening. That is what I did for the first month until I could take a full pill again.

Good luck.

I had RNY, not VSG in September and am Type 1.5 diabetic - taking metformin, lantus and novolog.  I was not allowed ANY pills at all until several weeks after the surgery.  If I did have to take something it had to be either crushed and swallowed in water or a liquid or sublingual form.  I was restarted on metformin (not glyburide or other orals) several weeks out when I was permitted to take pills again.

Good luck!

Topic: Type 2 Post op ?
I have a question for those who have had VSG?  I tokd my PCP that after I have my surgery I would not be allowed to swallow anything greater than 7 mm.  I currently take 2000 mg of Metformin ER and Glyburide 5 mg in the am and 10 mg at dinner.  I asked what she wanted me to do?  She said that I should take be testing 3x a day after the surgery.  She said that I would probably be decreasing my meds.  My issue is I am nurse and usually when I had to add a med or self adjust I would give her a call and run what I changed by her with no problem.  I plan on following her suggestion on testing but when I actually start eating food again I am wondering if I should start taking the Metformin or Glyburide?  If I have to start on back on my pills, I am thinking about starting the Glyburide since they are smaller and easier to swallow. I will start at lower dose.  What were other peoples experiences also?

Thanks
Lynn

half way through day 6 of a 14 day clear liquid pre op diet.  Actually doing okay, to my surprise.  I've adjusted bolus by about 25%.  Starting to get nervious for the surgery but realize that I really have to do this to get my health back.

Topic: Newbie with type 2
Hello, I have type 2 for about 10 years now. I take metformin, lantus and just started on novolog yesterday. I was on novolog another time about 4 years ago, (my previous Dr prescribed), my current dr took me off of it and I did pretty well until the last year, numbers stay in the high 200's I feel awful most of the time and in a "super fog" I remember when I took novolog the last time I gained a bunch of weight.

I've been research lapband, however my BMI is 3 points shy of the 35. However I am sure within a few months those 3 points will be a thing of the past. I take about 11 meds in all. So over it. I wish I could get myself together and lose the weight on my own, that never seems to happen. I need something to force me to do it, sad but true.

Glad I found the diabetes group!

mt1000,

Hi, yes my insurance did cover my surgery.  My original BMI was 39, 224 lbs, I joined weigh****chers and got down to 33, but could not lose more and I was in a losing battle with the low calorie count that I needed to maintain to keep my weight loss.  I quit weigh****chers and rebounded to a BMI of 36 when I applied for a surgical program.  4 months later my insurance did approve me and the day of surgery my BMI was once again 33.  I had very, very high cholesterol and tri's, high blood pressure, blood sugars not well controlled on meds and insulin (both long and short acting every day)  my insulin resistence was getting worse with every year (I was a diabetic for 29 years at this point).  Also multiple bleeding ulcers, most likely from the metformin I complained about for 14 years (hurt my stomach from day one and it never stopped)   I also had sleep apnea.  I truly prayed that everything I read about the surgery possibly improving or curing was going to happen for me and it did.  I should tell you that the first time my doctor applied for insurance company approval I was denied without a reason given.  His office reapplied reitering my whole history and I was approved just a few short weeks later.  My whole journey began with research in January of 2010, surgery last week of October 2010, goal of 135 reached in July 2011 and I am holding.  :)   No meds, at all, none.  Hopefully I can maintain this status for a long time to come.  I wish you well i your journey . . . if you have any questions I can help with let me know.  :)  Lily
