I need some balls to give him the finger!
Im six days post op and I would love to give my surgeon the finger. Not because he is a bad surgeon in any way but because his program is so geared for RNY patients that I feel like I am kind of floundering after surgery with little guidance that actually applies to my procedure. His check in paperwork that patients fill out EVERY time they see him doesn't even have the DS as an option on it!
His nutrition guidance post op is clear liquids for 8 days then on day 9 I can add in protein shakes for two weeks...then purees for two weeks then softies for another two and finally onto real food after that. WTF?! Who does that?!
I AM walking and sipping and doing everything I have been told but good lord! My surgery was Lap but I only have one painful incision (go figure). I keep reading everywhere on here that proper nutrition and protein levels promote healing...yet im on clear liquids for three more freaking days. Im not actually hungry so its not like im wanting to eat junk or anything, I genuinely just want to heal this wound up so I can walk like a normal person without doubling over.
I won't deny that being down 19 pounds since the morning of surgery kind of rocks but I would so much rather heal normally rather than play the scale game!
Im fairly certain that others before me have moved onto food that has some actual nutritional value before 6 days post-op right? So its not like I am doing anything wild and crazy by adding a freaking protein shake 3 days early.

It doesn't sound that different from my early post op diet. The only protein I could stand for the first few weeks were the bullets, broth and the fruity Syntrax shakes and they are considered clear protein on my program. Can you have any of these? Broth with unflavored Unjury got me through several days at your stage. Check to see if that would be considered OK for your program. The warm was really soothing for me, Good luck.
Im not technically supposed to have any protein powder for another 3 days. I would actually welcome adding some unflavored protein to my broth...at least it would make me feel less shakey and light headed!
I guess his post-op diet isn't really that far off...maybe im just whining because it sucks and I want to get on with life already lol. Thanks for the help!
Maybe ill stick my finger in some SF jello or something instead of wave it at my surgeon lol.

I was actually on clear liquids for 10 days, liquids (protein shakes, pureed soups) 14 days then mushie/soft for 14 days. When I asked my surgeon she said it was to give my new tummy time to heal and allowing it a gradual progression of making it process new foods. I will tell you that I was pretty faithful until the last 14 days then I pretty much ate what I wanted, however it was still pretty soft. I will also say that I've had NO complications at all. I'm not sure if this progression diet helped or not, but I'm very thankful. I won't lie it was hell and I was hungry plus I kept reading what some other newly pre-ops were eating and thought why can't I (but I'm pretty much a rule abider). Just thought I would give you my experience. Good Luck:)

I wish I could find my nutritional crapola, me thinks I threw it all out after I went of the rails of his stupid eating plan, because I can swear I was supposed to do protein before that.
But anyway yeah. I was eating freaking hamburger and lettuce and tomato three weeks out. WHICH IS NOT THE NORM OKAY PREOPS WHO MAY BE READING . Because 1. Protein powder is not a clear liquid. So telling you clear liquids only for four weeks...oh except for five 30g protein shakes a day is bunk. 2. Yes, nearly ALL OTHER surgeon's post-op diets I have EVER seen have been way WAAAAYYY less paranoid and silly than his. I flat out told the nurse at two weeks I'd had eggs and cheese multiple times and she was like enh whatever.
That said...I don't specifically recommend that you or anyone not follow their surgeon's advice. I didn't, I lucked out, my stomach is made of cast iron I was perfectly fine (I probably would have lost a crap ton more weight there in that first month eating only broth but hey I'm on track as it is so pffft on that).
SHOULD you decide to try a nibble of some boxed mashed potatos, or a scrambled egg, then make sure you do not lie if something bad happens. The issue with making the decision to go off the perscribed eating plan is that you take the responsibility for your healing in your own hands. If you follow the eating plan and something goes wrong, then you can be like, THIS IS NOT MY FAULT. But if you F up your healing because you decided to have some cottage cheese that's on you.

I sooooo wholeheartedly agree with you on owning up if you screw it up. I have absolutely no problem doing that. Im not really one for holding my tongue on much anyways lol.
Honestly, im not even considering anything half solid yet...im just thinking that even half of a protein shake would give me the energy to just make it through taking a shower without breaking into a sweat or doubling over in pain.
You are doing amazing with your weight loss so I can't even imagine you losing more this soon out but you rock it girl! I didn't even care about the scale until yesterday when my hubby asked me how much I had lost (coz my pants fell off when I was walking around). Hurt to laugh at myself too lol.

It is TOTALLY normal to be tired from taking a shower early out! I could not believe that just taking a short shower would then require a nap after I got all dried off and lotioned up!!
I would consider a shower chair/bench, it makes bathing so much easier/nicer early out. And later you can use it for other fun games with your hubby if you want while showering together!!

It's always a good idea to follow your surgeon's advice to the letter this early out. Some use different surgical techniques, and their post-op guidelines are based on that. I know it sucks donkey balls, but it's only for a little while. And like you said, this early post-op it's not like you're jonesing for a cheeseburger. Cut your baby tummy some slack and just follow the rules; it won't hurt and it just might save you a world of hurt.
