Has anyone had the VSG and thought that would be the only surgery you need, and then had to get a revision and have the  Duodenal ???
I am just curious if anyone has done this.
And also I am wondering, if you all can eat a normal size meal or do you all have restriction also??

We have a lot of restriction but to me it seems normal. On someday I feel like a bottomless pit and eat all day long. Yesterday was not a good food day so shakes were the way for me go. I can't answer your first question since I was a revision from RNY.

Hi Lisa,

There are a lot of folks on this forum who have had a two part DS.  Some by choice, some not.  If you will go back you will find them.

I'm not sure who you are talking to when you ask can we eat a normal size meal?  Are you asking anyone with a DS?  We have a sleeve, so we do have restriction.  How much varies greatly.

Have you had a VSG or are you trying to decide on a surgery?  Getting the WHOLE DS gives you malabsorption, restriction, AND metabolic help.  Doing the VSG alone with getting the rest of the DS as a "back up plan" is not a good idea, IMO, because you don't get the metabolic help PLUS you put yourself through anesthesia and surgery twice.

We say we have the sleeve to help us loose weight and the switch to help us maintain that loss.

I'm 4-1/2 years out. It depends on your definition of a normal sized meal. I can eat an entire quarter pounder with cheese and about four fries. I would call that a normal sized portion, but Americans' idea of portion size is very skewed, so we need to define "normal." What would you call normal?

I know VSG'er who have been able to lose and maintain with just the VSG... I know other VSGers who went on to have the DS switch at a later time to finish losing their weight. They tended to be higher in intial starting weight as well.  So to answer this properlyd have more info is needed....ie. how much have you lost,  where did you start, where do you want to end up?

I eat very little somedays and other days I am starved. Guess that is normal for a normie.

For the second question - I think it's a pretty normal size meal, maybe on the small side by American standards, but nobody would think I had had a WLS.  1.5 - 2 cups per meal is pretty standard at 2+ yrs out.  That IS still restricted from what I could eat pre-op, though.

For the first question - some people have, but not man RIGHT NOW, is what I suspect.  The VSG as a stand alone procedure is still fairly new, only having been done on a sizeable number of people where good (eg, reliable) statistics on LONG-TERM weight loss maintenance are just emerging.  I'm sorry, I don't have a link to it, but there was an article showing a pretty significant amount of wt regain at 5+ years out, with an emerging trend towards regain at 3+ years out.

I've spent some time reading the main board's, "whatcha eatin" threads & it honestly seems to me that those who are maintaining a 25 BMI 2+ years out with a VSG typically eat 1200 - 1400 calories/day.  Well, guess what I absorb about the same amount every day - that's just what I actually absorb.  I tend to eat around 2500 - 2800 calories/day.  This is pretty normal from what I've read on the DS board & those maintaining around a 25 BMI.

So, I guess the real question on long-term maintenance might be more . . . can someone maintain a "diet mode" restriction of 1200 - 1400 calories/day for the rest of their life to not gain weight back.  Seems to me that it would be difficult.  I'm sure some will, but I'm guessing most won't nearly every single day & that, over time, weight will creep back on.  That is, in my opinion or guess, as the probable reason there's long-term wt regain with a lot of those who had reached goal with a VSG.  Not impossible to maintain, just damn difficult for your entire life.

Just my opinion!
