Hi,

I was just wondering if everyone that has had the DS needs to take an acid reducer from here on out? Is there anyone out there that doesnt have to take it?

Thanks,

Trish

I don't need it now. The first couple of years I needed it.

I needed one before my surgery, but haven't needed it after my DS. It's been 5 years.

6 months out and I still do but I did before my surgery. I even had an esophagial ulcer removed during my surgery.

I had my DS in 12/03. 9+ years ago. Back then. From what I read, I think that most surgeons made the stomach sleeve larger then than they do today. My surgeon prescribed a PPI for his DS patients for two months, and for his RNY patients for two YEARS. I took my PPI religiously for the first 7 weeks, and then ran out. I did not notice any difference, so I've never taken one again.

I had pretty bad reflux pre-op, and I've had ZERO since. I really, truly think the size of the sleeve makes all the difference here.

I recently read a paper about the history of the sleeve gastrectomy that said it was developed from earlier operations to cure reflux. Take from that what you will.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I never needed anything before surgery but I need it now. I tried to not take anything today but could feel it coming on again. I will l continue to try going without on and off.

Thanks,

Trish

I did right after surgery, didn't need it for years afterwards, and needed it again about a year ago and have been on omeprazole since

Trish, my surgeon had me on Prilosec morning and night for 3 months, if I recall, and I went slightly more than that.  Nothing now.
