Caffeine is dehydrating.

Some surgeons don't want you to drink it, others don't care. I had coffee within a couple of days with the surgeons blessings. Some people think it dehydrates, but studies have shown that if you are a coffee drinker it will not affect you like that. And even if it did it makes little difference. Just use your common sense about anything to do with drink and food.

I'm not a coffee drinker. For my pick-me-ups, I used to drink alot of Coke Zeros. I had to give that up after surgery because I can't handle carbonation anymore. Then, I switched to tea. I'm struggling with that too, but I'm thinking it's the tannic acid in it.

I know this doesn't answer your question. I just wanted to share my struggles with the same types of beverages, but for different reasons.

I have been drinking coffee since age 16.  I drank coffee the day after my DS surgery and did fine.  I don't believe that coffee is dehydrating at all.

Coffee and water are the only beverages I drink daily.  I do have an occasional glass of wine.  I have not drank pop of any kind since early 2002 and don't miss it.

I drink coffee every day and diet soda.  It's true that caffeine can have a diuretic effect but it's VERY mild and as long as you know you are drinking enough, no worries. It's just a personal choice.
