Topic: RE: Lyrica: Thoughts?
I took lyrica for less than a month and gained 40 pounds. My best friend went on at the same time I did and gained almost 100. Both of us got off it and she lost the weight (she is blessed like that) I have not. With my current weight issues AND fibro adding 40 pounds was like adding a 100 ton elephant to my shoulders. It made EVERYTHING hurt so much more. I do not recommend it to anyone but especially anyone who is already dealing with weight problems. Oh and I was told that I gained the weight because the lyrica made me hungry but the thing was that I was not eating anymore or differently than normal and I was actually a lot more active than I had been up to the point I stopped taking it. (one does not gain weight riding their bike 4 to 6 miles a day and eating 2 meals a day with no snacks or sweets) But that's just my experience with it... I am a little cynical

I took elavil for a brief period and stopped due to ravenous hunger and weight gain. I told my doctor that I did not have my insides rearranged to lose weight, just to start taking drugs with weight gain side effects!

Topic: Elivil??
My pain management Dr. was thinking about putting me on Elivil(amatriptyline) for the FM stuff instead of Lyrica because the Lyrica gave such horrible edema in my foot and ankle region. She didn't this visit because I just started a new sleep med that my PCP put me on and she wanted to make sure if I have symptoms from the new med that we would not confuse them with the other med, so right now everything is going to be the same for 2 months, also if I don't have any side effects, from the sleep med, and I am still having all the FM issues, then she'll start me on Elivil. My major question and why I even posted this was to ask if anyone had been on it and if they had what if any side effects did they have? Any information you have had personally or even know someone that is/was on this drug, I would really appriciate to know the experience. I can read all the technical stuff on the web, but I want to hear about real people who have been on it. My biggest issue is that it may cause weight gain. And although my PM doc says it's not the medicine that picks up the food and puts it into your mouth, I know that weight gain may still be a possibilty. She said that about the Lyrica too, and somehow I magically, abruptly stopped losing weight the day after I started it and when I stopped taking it, I magically started losing again! So anyway, TIA for any responces.

I took neurontin before I got my band, couldn't swallow it after-too big. It seems to be a really good drug in that it doesn't interact with other drugs very much and you can take some pretty large doses with no problem. It worked well for me anyway. Yes fibro can cause an amazing number of symptoms and they aren't the same for everyone. Good luck hope all the testing comes up with a definate diagnosis, it's easier when you know what you are dealing with.

Update on me:still looking at lupus. did some more hardcore lupus testing in stead of just a screening plus rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, mixed connective tissue tests, polymyalgia rheumatica & other autoimmune/connective tissue tests, retesting all vits & minerals & thyroid plus some "poop tests" for c diff & some other bacteria & tummy issues. Results should be in next week. Lowered beta blockers because of severe hypotension (on them for migraines), added pills for fibro, adjusted migraine meds. Back in 3 weeks.  Doc was concerned about dehydration due to the amount of diarrhea I have been having and said no amount of Powerade type drink was going to replace what I was losing in electrolytes and it was probably making the hypotension worse.  I'm under strict orders to head to the ER at the first signs of dehydration or if the diarrhea continues even with the meds they are giving me (they are suppose to call it in I don't know what it will be yet).  My resting heart rate is in the 40's and when I stand up my BP drops to 80/60.  So that's been my last few days!
Instead of Lyrica they put me on Neurontin.  Anyone here tried that before?  I'm starting out on 300 mg three times a day.  I also take Topamax 50 mg twice a day.  Maybe I should just list my meds?

PRN (taken as needed for migraines)
Treximet 85-500 mg & Compazine 10 mg & Benadryl 50 mg taken together (this is a new treatment for me and I am still waiting on the prior auth to go through on the Treximet)
**OR**
Fioricet 50-325-40mg

Daily meds
All Vits and supplements plus Digestive Advantage IBS Formula Probiotics
Neurontin 300 mg 3x a day (for fibro)
Inderal 40 mg 2x a day (beta blocker for migraines- just reduced from 80 mg 2x a day)
Flexeril 10 mg at night for muscle pain
Prozac 20 mg
Topamax 50 mg 2x a day (for migraines)
Jolivette (birth control for migraines)
Ritalin 10 mg 3x a day (for sleep disorder- delayed phase sleep disorder)
Singular 10 mg (allergies)

I also have Vicodin from my surgeons office that I take when I need it from my stomach pain.  My stomach narrowed and I was in pain for 5 months and couldn't eat solid food and could just eat mushy foods.  After CT scans and GI scans and scopes the only thing he could see was I had some narrowing in the bottom of my stomach but he said that couldn't be my problem and dismissed it.  He finally did an endoscopy and stretched my stomach 2 weeks ago.  It has been much easier to eat since then.  I need to go in for my follow up with him though at this point I don't have much faith in his aftercare abilities.  He did tell my friend that took me to the procedure that I would need to have it done several more times before it would stay stretched out.  FUN!

Anyway- anyone have any feedback on the meds?  Or any of the tests or disorders that they are testing me for?  My mother has lupus so I am really familiar with that (I wish I wasn't).  Could it just all be the fibromyalgia causing everything to go out of whack?

Topic: RE: Lyrica: Thoughts?
I'm currently taking it and it has caused some weight gain ,  probably 15-20 lbs in 2 years. However, I have tried cutting back on the Lyrica and I notice a HUGE difference in my pain level.  I will probably need to continue taking this even after my RNY in August. I worry it may slow weight loss. I've tried Cymbalta...made me constipated. I understand that's an odd reaction to it, as I know lots of people like it.  I may try it again if the Lyrica keeps me from losing as well as I'd like. I don't know if it's just that Lyrica makes me hungry all the time, or if it really slows your metabolism. Going to Rheumy on Friday so I'll ask her. Where is our miracle pain reliever/appetite suppresant???

It worked well for me except it caused some weight gain so I switched to cymbalta. With your surgery tho it may not be as much of an issue. I'm not real familiar with the DS but I seem to remember you are able to eat more with the malabsorption so it may not be a problem for you. Good luck to you!
